These have been replaced along with the plugs by me on my 98 2.5 Elite earlier this year. The car has since had a number of unrelated issues and I am in the process of getting it sorted and back on the road, it hasn't been driven for about 3 months. What I am finding at the moment is that while it starts fine (bit noisy at the top end) and runs ok, when it is warm and you press the accelerator quickly to rev the engine there is a bit of a misfire. Feels like it is firing on 5 rather than all 6 cylinders. If you gently press the accelerator the revs increase smoothly without any issues. It was worse when I took it for a short distance down the road i.e. when the engine was under a load.
What I would like to know is (a) if anyone has got any suggestions of what I should be looking at and (b) how I go about testing the HT leads and DIS unit with a multimeter (electrics is not my area of 'expertise'). :-/

Some standard things to check.
While doing the work you haven't knocked any vacuum pipe connections off and that everything is connected back properly. Are all the plug leads firmly on the dis pack if they have been changed.
Second have a look under the bonnet in a dark place for any arcing on the plug leads.

Thanks I will try the 'dark' test first as I have checked all of the vacuum pipes thoroughly, I will check again though. I was considering removing the DIS unit and HT leads and plugs to check and refit, is this a sensible move? :y

I would check first for any stored codes......paper clip test.
The tapping is not uncommon for a car that has been laid up for some time, a good run out should help.
The petrol in the car how long has it been there, maybe some fresh petrol could help.
