Title: Anyone got an experience with DVLA - Advice Req
Post by: Markie on 11 September 2006, 14:28:22
Folks

Will try to keep this simple.

Project cdx purchased with private plate. Reason for purchase was transfer of plate to MV6. Scrap cdx/ sell parts/cheap private plate. Both cars are in my name at my address and i have v5 for both.

Donor car is cdx - No tax or mot - declared SORN at end of tax period and is off road.
Recieving car is MV6 - Fully road legal, always has been and always will be.

Got all forms to transfer the plate.
HOWEVER donor car must be taxed or SORN so i am covered.

HOWEVER donor car if SORN`d WILL be subject to local office inspection to verify it does actually legally have the cherised plate ( notes section says it should be taken to be inspected at agreed time and place so vin/ engine number are inspected)

So on the face of the DVLA terminology thats me foxtrot oscar`d

My question is has anyone been in a situation - SURELY the DVLA wont ask me to drive a non road worthy non taxed car to be inspected. SURELY if i canty meet this they wont say "tough you lose the plate??"

Does anyone know if this "probable" inspection can take place in my garage by the "regulators" Theres nothing to hide so i am perfectly comfortable with this.

grrrrrrrrr >:( admin jobsworth dvla bar steward so and so`s

I think you need to take your own advice and wait for Hotel 21 Markie.

was thinking that as i wrote - but not sure he would know as its more beurocratic rather than legal matter.....i dont think even the dvla know as i am getting conflicting info from them....certainly best case scenario slows down the dismantling of cdx

I dont think ( even if) they caame to inspect it they would be happy the engine was already removed  ;D

How about taking the donor car on a trailer to be checked? My wife used to work for the road tax office in Pompey & that's how cars periodically turned up there for inspection.
DVLA/Swansea don't want to make things too easy for the motoring masses.  ;)

Mark

From experience, your local LVLO (nearest to me is Dundee, check DVLA Website for yours) will require to view the car.  If the car cannot be driven, it must be trailered to them so they can verify its existance.  As long as donor car has been taxed within last 6 months, all should be OK for tranfer after viewing.  If you drive it there, take a yellow pages down the trousers in case they give you a skelping!!

On a previous plate transfer of mine, reason for examination of donor car was that the car had a V23 marker - declared total loss - and they wanted to ensure integrity of donor.

I then spend a fair time showing the YTS lass where to look for VIN/chassis marks etc as she did not have a clue.

I would call into the LVLO personally, without vehicles but with all paperwork, and see what the local manager wants.  He/she may well be happy to transfer without viewing, but dunno for sure.

the problem will be getting it trailored i dont presently have access to a car that tows, a towbar and a trailer - therefore this is going to cost......probably as much as the plate  :(

Been in to see them in Glasgow but they were frankly very vague and hopeless...guess i do the paperwork and wait and see - happy to pick them up bring them to the house, make them a cup of tea and shuttle them back if thats required  ;)

thanks Bruce  :)

Yep, only the tax is the exception, unless the car is less than 3 years old.

nope thats fine as it was taxed up till june and immediately with no breaks sorn`d

that section is an either or.... ;) also it is subject to - this section does not require it to have valid mot

Participating vehicles must be currently licensed, subject to annual testing (MOT) and available for inspection. However, applications involving untaxed donor vehicles will still be considered if:

the tax disc for the donor vehicle expired no more than six months prior to the date of the application (* please refer to the important note below)
the donor vehicle is not old enough to be tested, ie less than three years old for cars, motorcycles, etc or less than one year old in the case of HGVs

...actually readiong it again it seems to suggest it requires mot, hoevwe the guys in the glasgow office yesteraday  said it would not be an issue..........back to the office again today!!!!

grrrrr - either way i am in profit from the  cdx already!  ;)

okay all, just for information in case anyone does this.

I have spoken with DVLA office in glasgow and also dvla swansea who both confirm....

if car is not taxed but there is continious sorn,
if car is not MOT`d BUT has an mot that was "valid" at some point in the last 12 months then the vehicle meets the criteria....MOT expired 27 June 2006 so all seems well...

pop the application in post for it to be considored......talk about if and buts and possibly maybes  :o

You would have thought there would be some kind of procedure for this type of thing only you can guarantee its happened before.

The car has to be MOT'ed and taxed to transfer a number plate. I am having the same problem at the moment.

Cheers Nick

I managed to pick up "V6 DOA" recently off the DVLA web site ... funny if you know what DOA means and have a sick sense of humour !!!

purchase price included the transfer fee, was a pretty easy transition from old to new number plate really ...

An update and conclusion - which may assist others in this tricky area

H5GGL is now legal and belongs to my 2000 MV6.

Transfer of this cherished number plate is complete and cost £80

This was despite the fact the donor car was sorn`ed and sold to me without MOT.

I STRONGLY suggest if you ever need to deal with the dvla you deal personally and with a local office - Glasgow were brilliant throughout this transfer. In a nutshell i went in person with all the documents and my story about scrapping the car last wednesday ( along with payment) and about an hour ago went back as agreed and was handed a brown envelope with my new car tax, my new v5 , and everything else.

Job Done  :D :) :D

Hmmmm not sure about a saltire, am i correct in thinking that the appropriate number plate symbol will mean i DONT have to place those awful GB stickers on my boot ?

Ony if you take the car overseas on UK plates. otherwise it don't matter.

And TBH, judging by the lack of 'GB' stickers or appropriate plates on the cars on the S2N rally, the authorities don't seem to bother too much either!!
