Title: auto box breather, come off in me hand...
Post by: feeutfo on 08 October 2010, 18:23:06
...and cant find where it attaches to the box, where does it conect onto? Got me arm down the back of the engine, felt around the top of the box under the gear box tunnel...nout.
Box end of the pipe is all perished! :-?

Right at the back on the top. The metal pipe comes out vertical and then goes at right angles forwards. If you drop the rear mount you get a bit more room. Got a small monkey with prehensile hands? ;D ;D ;D

I have a "spare" gearbox , would a photo help?

Thanks V,
Don't worry re photo for me, although maybe for the guide?

So I won't be able to reach round from under the car and attach it? .....although...

Some plonker has been in there and attached the breather to the clip that normally holds the vac pipe away from the ac pipe right of plenum. Bit that's come off is only about a foot long, not long enough to reach to the back of the box, so maybe it's burnt through on an exhaust or something and the rest is still attached ?

Mine was quite brittle but then it was 11 years old.

I won't be doing the guide. kiss of death. I thought i would do one for changing a key fob battery and ended up losing the chip. never again, needs real experts.

I bet a new breather  would only be a tenner or so. Dip the end in hot water and then a slow fumble should do the job. Oo er missus. ;D ;D ;D ;D

I am hoping that that is your missus and not your monkey. More Rioja please. :o :o :o

When I took autobox out (twice in fact) both times breather pipe was a b*gger to pull off box.  Only way to refit it was to soak in very hot water first.  As Varche says breather on box is on top towards back with connector facing forwards parallel to top of box.  HTH mate :y

Probably as well you found it before you got water in the box, though. :y

Yep...is there much traffic through the breather? I presume it's just expansion as the box warms up/ cools?

Yep. Just to stop it blowing the seals as it warms up.
