when my 2.5td id on idle there is a ticking noise from the engine, only seem to be in her on low rev, i have heard thid bmw engine doing the same in the 325tds, there are 192k miles on her and previous owner replaced all hydrolic tappets before sale to me, anyone came across this before? or anyone any ideas on fixing it?starts and drives well and performance is good :P

Check the aux belt tensioner and the PAS pump mounting brackets....
-
its not the aux belt tensioer, iv had it af before, sounds like a tappety noise and does get quicker as you rev up but dissappears after 2k rpm

Try some Wynns Lifter Treatment a couple of hundred miles before your next oil change and see if it makes a difference. If it doesn't then no harm as you'll be draining the oil out anyway. ;)

new ones fitted as previous owner thought it was hydrolic tappets

Hmm ticking could be many things, however i had a slight tick on mine after the floods 4years ago, and could not suss it, finally found it was an exhaust gasket had blown the corner of it out!! me and TB did it one afternoon around his place, lovely and quiet after that!

did the ticking dissappear up the rpm range? i did think that but thought it could be too simple but might b worth looking into
-
yep that was what threw me for a while it was only there at low
rpms went quiet above 2k!!
-
mine is quite loud at low rpm
-
I had a 95 for 44kmls that ticked. It didn't get any worse.
-
Pretty high mileage, Maybe it could be the cam chain tensioner???
-
Could be the timing chain rattling ! >:(

And surprisingly easy as well - it was a job I wasn't looking forward to, but it didn't cause us any problems IIRC...
