Title: Which wax?

I am using Mer at the moment and while it is OK I wondered if any OOFs out there can recommend a better product for keeping the paintwork nice and shiny?  :y

I have a dark grey colour and autoglym is what i have always used. their high definition wax (approx £25 on amazon) is brilliant. as a cheaper alternative their super resin polish at just under a tenner is very good also.

ive just switched from Mer to Meguirs NXT2, and am VERY impressed, far longer lasting 'beading' than the mer gave me

admittedly I clayed it for the 1st time as well, but seems a far better product to me.

I have heard the term 'clayed' but what is it, what do you do and what are the effects?

i have been tempted to use one but from what i know its a clay bar that you moisten and place it in the palm of your hand and as you run it over the paintwork it makes it a (real) clean surface by removing all the tiny imperfections and marks ready for waxing

You buy a clay kit...

1st wash the car removing as much dirt as possible.
then to clay...
spray a bit of the car with lube (quick detailer)
you then gently rub the clay over this, till it moves with no friction, then wipe clean and move onto the next bit.

Much easier than it sounds, and really removes the dirt.

I reckon for most people, doing this more than every few years is overkill.

once youve done the car, I then washed it again to remove residue, then applied the NXT2.

i all ways use autoglym now gevs a reall good shine

once or twice a year ill do it with a lf and half mix of tcut and autogym with a buffer if thees any bad marks ill use a bit of G4 to buff em out

but if your do that and start ueing a ower mop becareful with cutting compounds and a mop at paint/panal edges where paint is thin or out burnight trow it to the metal

if you not done and color sanding or buffing i would reomend geting and old bonet

to pratice on from scapy before atacking your pride and joy with a cutting compound and a mop

auto-balm from Bilt Hamber. is superb. they use it on classic cars. it puts a shine on your car like a mirror. you only have to use about twice a year. & it protects your paint prevents corrosion from stone chips. 300ml.£14.63. with applictor & buffing pad. they also sell auto clay.reg.200grm £9.74. & soft.200grm £10.72. I use a German product called Klasse All in One which is an acrylic polish and then seal result with Klass High Gloss Sealant. This seems to last at least a year on my Elite which is garaged and 6months on wifes Corsa which is kept outdoors.

I use Muc Off Miracle SHine Polish, only £11.99 and bet than most stuff costing double that!!!  It contains the Carnauba wax....

I tend to wash the car, use some tar & glue remover on the lower parts of the front door panels or where ever tar has splattered up the sides, then put on a coat of Carnuba Gold from autosmart (£5 last time i checked for a tub, lasts ages) gives it a cracking shine, then being the pervert i am, put a layer of autoglym extra gloss protection over the top.

this is a once a year job for as the results are good.

once or twice a week i then wash the car, spray some "tango" over the car (from autosmart) sponge it all in, jet wash it all off and leather it... bingo, looks like it's just been waxed again and beads like buggery... :y

I have used in the past g4 cutting compound first to get rid swirl marks and light scratches then a coat of paint sealer, then a coat of mequires glass gold wax. Just be veru careful if you use the cutting comound method. Keep the painwork wet at all times. Its very messy but the results are worth it. Going to do the migg when I get a chance. Bumper wax for the trim and bumper.
Has anyone used a professional car detailer?
