Title: Help _ Strange auto Gearbox behaviour / revving?
Post by: ScaniaV8 on 11 October 2010, 16:06:11
Last couple of journeys (motorway 100 miles +) I have had peculiar behaviour from my auto gearbox with high revving and appearing to drop into 3rd gear... I think).  Any ideas and clues please?. The car seems to behave itself normally when driving about town. Gearbox fluid level was topped up quite recently (took about 1.5 litres Dexron II).
thanks in advance.

was the oil checked correctly,ie engine and box warm and checked with engine running in park after moving selector through the gate

Yes have experienced exactly this even after atf and filter change and recheck - I may be alone on this but I do think it is crank sensor related - changed mine and no repeat touch wood - coincidence it may be but this link between engine speed and gearbox is worth the cost of a crank sensor if you are thinking of more expensive investigation.

it may not be of relevance to your symptoms, but     omega gearboxes should be run on Dexron 111.

Just a couple of points...1. my original handbook specification states Dexron II gearbox oil to be used....is Dexron III the same and if mixed during top up procedure will this cause any problem?

2. The problem I originally  reported with the Gearbox changing down suddenly in '3'  with accompanying high revs ..will this have recorded any codes and do I need to do a paperclip test  etc. Also someone  suggested maybe dodgy 2/3 solenoid and even a cam shaft sensor as culprit items.
thanks

Any further advice gratefully received

apologies for earlier reply...I did mean crank shaft sensor as a potential culprit  (not cam shaft sensor),but I do not understand the relationship with the gearbox shifting problem and high revs experienced  etc.

if I am correct then in due course you will get the high revving as the gearbox effectively goes into neutral and will then go into gear with a clunk and at some stage this will trigger limp mode. You can turn engine off and restart and then you will get a code which points to issues to do with speed sensor or gearbox service. This happened to mine but no repeats for months now - but I am not doing very long journeys in the Omega these days just around town stuff but for me that is when the fault with the high revving appeared.

So you mean it got fixed by itself ??

no problem disappeared after crank sensor change prior to that changed gearbox atf and filter as well

Further problem reporting......gearbox is behaving erratically. When starting from cold, engine immediately races at 2ooorpm and gearbox thumps into drive when selected. When driving seems to to rev quite high to 4000rpm before gear changes. Then seems to settle down and drive normally for a while before sysmptoms re-appear. Is thisl ikely to be a Crankshaft sensor problem? will there be codes stored reflecting this situation and what codes should I expect to see. Any idea on part number and price for the Crankshaft sensor?.
Many thanks
David

This sadly is similar to the woes i had with my box... this resulted in the gearbox oil boiling itself and recovery by "AA".

I suspect that mixing D II with III will have been a really bad idea, and certainly all the autoboxes (Senator and Omega) I have had anything to do with recomend D III.

In the long run I would be looking for a replacement box
