Title: Door mouldings
Post by: al brown on 23 October 2010, 14:05:49
Hi all, what would anyone recomend to turn my faded (now greyish) door mouldings black again. Have replaced the 2 rear doors and now they trims look odd as they dont match any where near.
Cheers   Al

Old wives tale is rub them over with  !!! ..peanut butter.!!.the smooth stuff by all accounts.

I use autogylm bumper/trim restorer...it turns it all black even though it is a greenish slime colour, but never seems to last too long and then requires recoating, but no big deal.

Remember ages ago used to use something like "back to black"..it was like boot polish and did a good job but not sure if still available.

Try the autogylm route would be my advise.

Best way to return faded plastics to black is with a heat gun! Its true-just use low heat and be careful not to leave on one area to long Done this on novas, corsas and my miggy :y
Seriously it works. :y

Honestly, was hugely impressed with the autoglym stuff. It's like the jelly-like consistency of v cold diesel (you'll know what I mean if you've ever happened across some old summer diesel left in the garage during winter. I have, but then i dont have many friends. So swings and roundabouts  :D )

And it's fantastic, it isnt greasy, or leave a nasty silicone resedue either. Just rub it in well, and it last forever and a day. Back to black I always swore by, but that is, as amba says literally like boot polish - ie: it has a die in it, so physically stains the plastic. Not a bad thing, the end results the same, but trust me, go for the autoglym stuff, if I were you.

Most body shops use my method you dont have to keep messing about cleaning it Back 2 Black and EVERY other product goes grey within a week or 2 The grey is from U.V rays The heat gun trick warms the plastic-it sweats and goes black Like I said Ive done loads for customers! :y :y

Back to Black, yes it is still available in many places - I still use it all the time because it is the only thing that looks right after it is applied and buffed. Do it once a month and they will always look black and shiny.
Tip! Wait for a fine day - Give all of the black trim good clean off first with Cellulose thinners taking great care not to get it on the paintwork, then apply the Back to Black straight after.
It works cos I have done it for years and years and ...... too old to remember when I started using it now  ;D

Thanks for the ideas. Am after the longest lasting solution. May try autoglym as have heard good things about their polish. That said I will try the heatgun first as it is free although it sounds too good to be true.
Will let you know how I get on net week, am on leave for a week so will do it with works kit when I return.
