bottoms of the H1 bulbs dipped beam looked brown possibly overheated perhaps this dimmed the performance.

Yeh i noticed that too when i first got it. With CD spec, its worth at this time of the year giving headlights quick wipe with a cloth before a night drive  :y

Most of my driving is on unlit, twisty, rural-roads and I`ve been horrified by how poor the dipped headlamps are on my T reg. Miggy; I bought some better dipped-lamps (the high-beams always seems good enough).....the 'Osram: 50% brighter' Halfrauds bulbs did make a bit of difference, but what made the greatest improvement was adjusting the headlamp`s electric level-switch to it`s absolutely lowest setting, which does significantly improve the 'view' of the nearside kerb area when on dip.

My M reg. L.R Discovery with it`s completely std. 60/55 H4 lamp units has soooooo much better`a dip beam pattern.....so much in fact, that I`d swear it has twice the wattage of the Miggy`s dipped lamps. :-?

Yes your descrption was spot on and it only took seconds. Even the n/s behind battery was relativly easy too.
