help!! which locking tool is best to use to lock crankshaft up. i got hold of the laser 3302 set but when i connected it up crankshaft timing mark and mark on oil sump housing they were not in line with each other.if i moved crank so that tool locked the marks were about 2 to 3 mm out.can you shim out the gap or can you put the belt on and tension it all up without using the locking tool. was looking at the sealey vs130 but a bit pricey at £200

well never done a belt on these but i can imagine if you're careful you shouldn't really need a locking tool.... i may be fully shot down for this but i usually make marks where everything lies and line it all up on that afterwards but backyard mechanics may not apply here!!! ;D

Unfortunately, it doesnt work.
The marks on the car are erroneous at best.
The locking kit should give you a better guide. Buy the DVD from the OOF shop - It has all you need to do a belt change (provided you have a decent locking kit).

Do not attempt cambelt change on a V6 without locking kit. Other members have found the Laser kit to be inaccurate. Best to sell it on on Ebay and look for a decent kit. ;)

I have read on here that the Lazer Locking Kit doesnt fit properly... not sure where it doesn't fit properly though as I have a Pickervant one.
Usually lock it to the Crank, turn the crank clockwise until the slide locks onto the water pump, job done Crank is locked in position :y
I suppose the marks your talking about could be slightly out like the ones at the top near the cams on the backing plate :)
Please don't try and do the timing without using the locking kit, no matter what people tell you :y

Sadly not. You can get away with just a locking wedge on many twin cam engines, and nothing on many single cam engines, but the GM quad cam V6 definately needs a locking/timing kit. You cannot get the cam timing correct without, as it has infinate adjustment on it.
