This relates to a long story of air con woes which I will avoid going over. :(
My issue is that I had a leaking service connector valve on the air con, I went into my local dealer and the quoted me 5 hours of labour and the cost of the part £180 ish to sort the problem. :o :o
Thanks to the guys on here I was informed that the valves can be replaced on their own for about £5 each, :) So why the hell did I get a BS quote instead of being told by the stealers that all they needed to replace was the valve and then regas the beast? >:( I specifically told tham that the valve was leaking so they cannot claim ignorance.
If it were not for the OOfs I could be seriously skint for no reason. >:( >:(
Beware the stealers, always check with the OOFs. :y

Hi,
Did you get the valves separately and find someone with the fitting tool & fitted OK
Is your Aircon OK now ?
Roger

Sourced the valves, the one which leaked can be removed as a unit rather than having to removed the valve from its holder - it simply screws off. Got it booked in for Tuesday at a garage I trust who do air con regassing, they will pressure test the system, clean and regas - fingers crossed!
Big thanks to you :y for getting me heading in the right direction and to AndyC for the diagrams. :y

Stealerships aren't known as stealers for no reason. Always ask here first IMO. Even for simple stuff, solutions are always evolving and changing according to knew products, ideas and procedures.
Idealy only use the parts dept for the cheep stuff, they do some good deals such as gm spark plugs and oil, ESP on trade club, but I think it's safe to say, avoid the service dept like death itself. >:(

Having strayed into Ford's parts dept next to our Vauxhall dealership I can say that in Bury (Lancs ;)) Vauxhall win hands down. I only wanted a fan belt ..... admittedly it was for a 20+ yrs old Granada ..... I even went in with a Motorcraft part number from the old belt, but was treated with complete indifference by the short 4rse little tw@ on the other side of the counter ..... I felt like dragging him over it. >:( >:( >:( >:(
I'd like to see the Manager please!!!!!! ..... he was very helpfull ...... I think he'd have liked to thump him too ::) ;D :y

I can never understand that attitude from people. It doesn't matter how small a customer is, they are still a customer, still spending money, still paying your wages. Just because they are coming in and spending £10 today, doesn't mean that they won't be coming back and spending £1000 or even £10'000 tomorrow.

Contrary to my experiences. When I was building the kit car I pestered the local Ford dealers endlessly. They were always able to find parts I needed despite normally not being able to tell them what vehicle / model / VIN / Reg. number they came from.
The local Vauxhall dealer have often struggled to find the right parts even when I can give them all of the above, and the part number of the part. ::)
It all comes down to whether the guy at the counter can be bothered. :(

In a nut shell! :y :y
Which is why andyc @ Drive can get you parts that other dealers say are NLS, even if they've to come from Germany ;) ;)

Getting yourself "seriously skint" for the sake of air con would seem a bit silly as well.

Had the same with my local stealers for a schrader valve on my 3.2 a/c total bill £600 and that was 2years ago!!

Malcolm can you detail source as I have had same prob only valve did eventually reseat after re-gas but I don't think system was completely topped up. Had same experience as others with the local stealers although this was surprising as they are normally fairly good and it helps knowing the guy behind the parts counter who gives me trade. Some GM parts are better priced and quality than alternative pattern ones in my experience, although the price on some of them is nothing short of exorbitant and pattern parts or secondhand is way to go.

Sourced from a local breakers from an Omega that had an aircon system in good nick. Andyc posted the pictures on a previous thread - last post was 28 Oct, currently about page 9. He also sent a pm with the part numbers etc which I will send on to you.
Hopefully this fix will work when it is regassed tomorrow. :y

I really need to say that I find my local Vx dealer very good in the light of my experience. The guys behind the counter seem to do their best, and on some occasions have helped beyond the norm. The last time doing me a printout of a parts diagram of the sump layout, which coupled with info from the forum helped me with a worrying issue of iron filings found on the crankshaft sensor. On prices bearing in mind that they give me T/C prices for genuine GM OE parts I'm well satisfied. My branch certainly don't qualify for the term "stealers" One little precaution I take (being retired) is, I always try to shop in non busy times. There it is, just thought I'd let it be known that some VX dealers do care :y

Are you using the Evans H on Hunslett Road? If so I will make a trip across soon as the dealer in York is not part of the TC deal.
You have spoken of the helpfulness of the dealer you use before and to be fair the ones in York have always been very polite, friendly and helpful, it is just that if you state that a valve is leaking and it can be replaced for £5 you do not expect a main dealer to quote you £450 plus to fix the problem. Being a main dealer surely carries with it some responsibility for knowing about the cars you are claiming to be 'experts' with. :-?

I can never understand all this re the fill valves. It's been said here that people have been told it's all part & parcel of the pipework, as I have by the air/con bloke that worked on my car. It took me two mins to realise it came off when I stuck my head under the bonnet. As Malcolm says, the valve at the front of the car (I can never remember which is high & low pressure) is around £5 (same valve as an Astra G) and the other is even less.
-
Well how about this? I've been through it all! 2 seperate (different firms) regas and degas, then finally got it sorted at a firm I used a few yrs back, the invoice reads, I quote,"check air conditioning system, vacuum down and check for leaks, regas as necessary, inlet valve found to be defective, order replacement pipe assembly, fit to vehicle and re-gas finally check for correct operation". The Inv total is £264.38.This had to be done in 2 seperate visits, the 1st visit they did attempt to replace the valve but finally had to order a replacement pipe assembly from the main VX dealers, this took 3 weeks to come from Germany, and although I can't recall the exact cost it was well into 3 figures. All in all Andy, it also has made me wonder about the valves, could it be some incompatability issue between them and the regas machines? The manager did make a point to me that it is crucial that the systems must be purged of all contamination and moisture, and obviously the valves will play a vital role in this.Anyhow the air con is now OK,and has worked very well it is important for my wifes health.

Success at last! ;D
Took the car to have the air con degassed, flushed, pressure tested and regassed, I received the call at 11 this morning to tell me that the job was done, all OK and the car is ready. :D Not the cheapest place in the world but I am confident that they have done a good job. Plus I get a nice invoice detailing exactly what has been done. :y
All I need to do now is get my other Miggy and the S80 through their mots this week and I will be a happy man! :o

Splendid news Malcolm. :y

Good news Malcolm - Thanks for PM :y
-
Really good news Malcolm, glad to know you've got your air con problems sorted. With regard to your dealer query I think my local dealer is the same as the York dealer. However when I approached them a few yrs back they agreed to allow myself favourable terms due to my past trade history with them.
-
So it is not what you know but who you know? ;)
Next bit of good news - my old 2.5 Elite just passed the mot with only a few minor fixes! I am getting happier by the minute :D :D :D
Only the S80 to get through on Friday now.
