Title: installing front shocks

well today i got my new shocks and springs can anyone give me a heads up on any tricky bits removing/installing the fronts found all i need for the back ones but i have never seen mcphersons with only one mounting bolt all the cars i've had have had three in a triangle? also if anyone had torque settings for front and back it would be much appreciated as i don't have the haynes book of lies! thanks very much,

Axle stands. Wheels off. Remove & support caliper (easier access to bolts). Disconnect brake hose from strut bracket. Remove abs sensor wiring from strut. Undo bottom droplink nut. Undo both retaining bolts at bottom of strut & release it. Remove cap at top of mount, spanner on the large retaining nut and counterhold damper rod (do NOT unscrew this). Lower and remove strut. When new ones fitted, full geometry set up. As a rough guide to camber read this http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1283955011.
Torque settings are; Strut mounting nut....55Nm.
Strut to steering knuckle (2 bottom bolts) 90Nm, angle tighten through 45deg, angle tighten through 15deg. Droplinks 20Nm.
Brake caliper bolts 95Nm then angle tighten through 30-45deg.
Rear torques are Shocker lower bolt.....110Nm. Upper nut...20Nm

thanks Rob you're a legend just spent the last half hour searching the net for that info, i will take some photos and maybe do a how to!(maybe the second side!) Boy would never have thought the brake caliper bolts were so tight.

If you have a shock and spring complete/assembled then thats easy, but if you need to assemble with your currently fitted top shock mount assembly then spring compressors and much elbow grease will be needed as well.

thanks Chris i've got new springs and shocks that do need assembling but i will take it to a shop as i don't have spring compressors to install the springs, hopefully they won't charge me too much!

Once the strut is dismantled look at the ball bearing race in the top mount (yellow & green plastic rings on most Ive seen)
These can be dismantled if you are carefull and cleaned out and regreased. If there is any pitting to the raceways or rust they should be replaced.
Pitting or 'hammer' marks in the races cause the strut to want to stick in one position which can casus the steering to centre up with a slight off set and a sort of wandering or "tacking" from side to side when tring to steer straight.
