Am considering fitting a F28 6speed box in my miggy, I know its been done to a vectra gsi with a 3.0 conversion, but am wondering if there will be any difficulties in fitting one into a omega knowing the engine mounted differently...?
can anyone help or offer advise..???

Isn't that a FWD gearbox ?

Indeed it is, hence the "F" prefix. It won't fit, I'm afraid.

its actually from the calibra 4x4, has the ability of both FWD and RWD, theres a modification that you buy to convert it to run FWD...

But the Omega is RWD and the engine is front to back not side to side.

the blanking plate on the f28 is a kit for running FWD instead of 4x4, that doesnt make it RWD. when used on a vectra/calibra/cav v6 application the engine is being used in a FWD application...

Wont happen im afraid. T56 with modded bellhousing, mounts and prop would be the only feasable way imo

With such a broad torque delivery, I would have thought a 6 speed gearbox would be a waste of time on a V6 anyway.

4x4 Calibres had their problems with their gearboxes when first released. No idea what it was though, but IIRC a lot drove around with the 4x4 bit fuse removed. They were only part time 4x4 anyway.

it was to do with a poorly designed transfer box. many people used the blanking/conversion kit and as you say drive them fwd.

mating an f28 to a fwd c25xe or other v6 isnt a bad idea, the f25 is a reliable gearbox but you're forever driving along in 5th thinking you're in 4th. they really do need an extra gear like the c20lets, particularly if you've added power through x30xe cams or even a full engine conversion

Not necessarily another gear, though. It's just that the diff ratio isn't right for the engine.

Is there any possibility your tyres are too small? My mv6 at 3000 revs cruises along quite merrily at just over 80 on the satnav, and im running stock steels with 205 60 15 tyres, and the turboderv would be doing similar speeds, imo there would be no justification for shorter ratios up through the gears with an oh so slightly taller 6th, although you could cheap out and buy a different gearknob and pretend..................... :y

6 speed boxes are more suited to the modern oil burners as its all there torque is delivered in one big lump, so more gears the better.
-
if you fitted this box, you would have :-
one driveshaft going along to car in the direction of the rear axle.
one driveshaft going across the car in the direction of the front-right wheel, and
one driveshaft coming out of the front bumper.
delete the right-hand wheel one if you fitted the blanking plate.

True but if you check out the gear ratios of a 6 speed box and compare them to a 5 speed box from an earlier car you will find that the ratios from 1st to 5th are shorter and 6th isnormally about the same as 5th would be on a 5 speeder. This is done because the torque produced by the newer diesel engines is so much greater and through a narrower rev range, with the lower gearing the car accelerates quicker up through the gears instead of loading up a taller gear for longer and thus preventing premature gearbox failure, whereas the older diesels produce slightly less torque through a greater rev range and are quite happy with 5 speeds, until you chip them. Im sure there are many people on here who will tell you of gearbox failure after having their cars chipped, simply because the gearbox cant deal with the extra power. So imo if the cars standard, leave it standard, if its been tuned or modified, then upgrade as stuff breaks. The expense alone of modifying a 6 speed box to fit an omega would rule it out as an option for many people

Very interesting. I am now armed with more ammunition for the people at work who think a 2.0 tdi A6 6 speed FWD, and a Seat Altea of all things 2.0 tdi with superchip is better/faster than my machine!

Pah! Vag rubbish. Id rather have a rusty bedford than a descendant of a beetle any day ;D

That is so true!

And besides, they are all just rebadged skodas anyway

Yeah, with lots of unwarranted badge snobbery!

Oh dont start me lol, i love picking on ford mondeo jaguars, vauxhall vectra saabs and of course mr2 ferrari's :D

Whats wrong with me having 2ferraris, I also have 2 Omega's ::)

Depends how the box is ratio'd. My friends gti-6 pug is ratioed to be quick and use the high end of the revs, even in 6th it could use another gear for cruising!
A 'big car' 6 speed like the T56 (found in corvette, monaro, viper, 90's astons etc and I think the lotus carlton) use 6th as like an overdrive, the top speed tends to come from 5th.
