Title: heater/climate control problem
Post by: VmaxGazza on 23 November 2010, 13:07:19
hi, i am having problems getting the heater to give out any heat, the aircon has worked at keeping me cool but now as winter is here having trouble getting heat, i thought that there was no engine thermostat but have found that the climate control keeps the engine coolant fans running all the time giving the impression of no thermostat, have done some fault eliminating myself and coming to the thought that matrix is blocked or there is a fault with climate control, selecting ECO on, only makes things worse, windscreen steams up, any thoughts??? cheers

What?
Do both pipes going through bulkhead to matrix get hot. What temp does the engine reach. Does rad top hose stay cold then when engine up to temp get hot or does it get progressively hot on initial start up :question

I have a similar thing with mine which i have just assumed is the matrix. I've put it on the list.

You say putting ECO on makes it worse. When ECO is selected it stops 'conditioning' the air.

All air conditioning does is remove the moisture, which makes it easier to cool the air aswell. You can also use air con on heat aswell.

The reason the windows steam up more when ECO is on is because there is moisture in the air coming from the fans which condenses on the windows. If you turn ECO off, the air will be drier, therefore any moisture on the windows will be dry off. :y And you'll have clear windows! Helps if they're cleaner aswell, less particles for condensation to form around.

aye, found a lad at work who used to have omega, and he set the heater to 'HI', switched to 'ECO' and recirc, telt me if windows mists up to press button above recirc and this blasts windscreen clear, it worked but its still not as hot as the Vectra i used to have, but think i can live with it

Slightly pedantic mode ON ...  (trying to explain how it works mind !!)

Talking about "turning ECO ON" is a bit of a misnomer .... it really is "selecting ECO mode" .. in ECO mode the ECC continues to work and attempts to regulate temperature BUT the compressor of the air conditioner no longer runs  ( hence ECO for economy ....)

The effect of the compressor/air con working is to cool the air considerably. Cold air cannot hold moisture (which is why we get fog on winter mornings) so the air dries out. It is then heated by the matrix if required to give warm, dry air. This greatly reduces condensation inside the car.

With ECO selected you still get warm air, but it is "undried" ... so holds more moisture to condense on cold surfaces.

With "recirc" selected no "fresh air" enters the cabin .. so any moisture already there satys trapped, and because human beings breathe ( I find it a useful attribute  :) ) the driver and all pasengers slowly but surely increase the amount of moisture in the cabin air (humidity) the more warm wet air .. the more condensation on cold surfaces.

So, to get the "best" demisting ... air con running, ECO off, Recirc Off, rear vents clear and a warmish temperature selected.

HTH  :)

well thank you pedantic one, but you missed the point, trying to warm the car, but cheers

ECO off? dont you mean deselecting ECO mode??

I'm not the only one that thinks Entwood is pedantic then.
