have you tried to turn the wheel and holding it as far is it will move (bout 10mm) and whilst holding it there turn the key in the ignition.

failing that maybe the old indicator stalk bit breaking off into the steering mech has happened.

theres a tab that sticks out of the indicator stalk (in at the steering wheel) that clicks the indicator off when you have finished turning round the corner, sometimes they pop off and go inside the steering boss, jamming it or making a clicking sound as you turn the wheel

there is 3 screws under the cowling, and 2 either side of the steering boss, which ironically you need to turn the steering wheel slightly to get the screw driver in to

there is usually plastic plugs covering those 2 screws, which just pull out to let you access the screw head

if you are stuck for pics let me know and il take a couple and post them up at some point

thanks for that but i couldnt get the key to turn so couldnt get position 2? ::)
have done it now though  me and heavy the hammer destroyed the barrel ;D

Basically i hit the end the key goes in a few times and the end snapped off , so from there i just used a screwdriver to get bits of the barrel out and the tumblers until the key would turn, think the problem was with tumbler 8 or something  ;D ;D
Need a barrel now BUT the end that initially snapped can be put back in place when you leave the car so no oportunistic pikey smackheads look and go hmmm no barrel = joyride 8-)

Incorrect, it needs to be at number 1 to remove the barrel.

Have you tried any lube in the key slot? Use a PTFE based lub or gun/duck oil. Take the pressure off the lock pin by turning the wheel slightly and wiggle the key left and right as you try turning it.

If you get another key & barrel it's not difficult to make a barrel fit a key so you can stick with one key for all locks. There aren't that many different tumblers, it' just the arrangement inside.  :y

sorry to tell you after you have broken your barrell.but this is a common fault on all vauxhall cars.when extreme temprature changes happen e.g gets very hot or cold weather the very bottom on the barrel locks up so that the key wont go all the way in.i.ve called loads of auto locksmiths out and they remove the end of the barrel and lubricate it.ps im a aa recovery patrol :D

As said, there are only so many different tumbers that can be fitted inside a barrel, it's just the various permutations of them that gives the different locks. You might be able to salvage some of your old tumblers and along with those inside A N Other barrel you should be able to match up a set of tumbers to fit your existing key. Don't drop the tiny springs, you'll never find them again.  ;D ;D ;D

Oh!  ::) I've not had to play with my Omega's locks, but in the past when I've made other Vauxhall's barrels fit keys I've used tumbers from a door lock to make the numbers up, I'd imagine you'd be able to do so with an Omega's locks too. You can always dress the odd tumber with a file if need be.  :y

hi i had the same issue the other week,

remedy = spray wd40 into key hole of barrel, use the straw to direct up and down the tumblers, leave for 5 mins, then repeat,
now get an extension socket bar or similar and tap the barrell after a while it should shock free the tumblers, and the key shoud turn, it is caused normally by crap and crud build up in the tumbler grooves causing them to stick and fail to line up when the key goes in.

you should find the key has no feel to it going in before doing the above,

if all goes well and it frees up, direct 3 in 1 oil then to keep it lubricated,
i have done this on a cavalier and vectra in the past same results.

hope this helps

and let us know if it works please

ooops didn't notice page 2 sorry,

i had even rang vauxfraud for a price, £95 inc coding if i remember, then remembered my cav and vectra having same issue,
so off to shed for wd40 doh!!!!!! ran out and an back on shelf >:( but how could it be empty? oooohhhh thanks kids flaming bike chains i guess lol

anyway i just pop a bit of 3 in 1 on the key and stick it in and out and shake it all about every so often now,

like i said if you put the key in and you feel now clicking of the tumblers or resistance then they are sticking open.

hope you get sorted good luck dude.

just to add, if you want a same key barrell replacement you need your card pass for the vauxfraud, if you don't have it then it will cost £25 to get it off them before the can order the same key code barrell etc,
if not bothered they can just order another barrell but down fall you will have one key for the ignition and another for the doors, but central locking takes care of the doors.

Have a read of this WD40 is not a lubricant (http://www.clapham-locksmiths.co.uk/blog/tag/lubricant/) before squirting too much 'water dispersant' into your locks.

I think the traditional lubricant for locks is powdered graphite but I don't know if it is any good for prevent moisture getting in and freezing in this weather :-/

Before you split the barrel to try and match your key.you should check the wear on the key.as the keys are laser cut and most of the locking and unlocking is done by the remote control.the only lock that wears is the ingnition lock.the key will wear down.so matching a new lock to a worn key wont always work.my advise would be to get a barrel and key and programme the remote from the key to the car.if you do that hide your old key somewhere on the vehicle in case of battery failure.then atleast you can manually open the doors to jump start it   sorry to go on and on :-/

yes you are correct on both andy but if you read again i said i used 3 in 1 oil after to lubricate it!!!
wd40 was used to degrease or unclog the issue and the 3 in 1 to lube it up again,
as i had no graf powder i could not use it, but my main concern was to get the damm steering lock off without having to hammer the barrell off!

this happens when you put your keys in your pockets and transfer fluff etc to the lock, same maybe from dropping your keys on the grubby floor, once the key goes in the tumblers grip / drag the muck from the key to their nice tight grooves which in tail bungs up the tumblers and helps them to stick open.

if the tumblers are stuck, graf power will not shift them just add to the problem in my opinion.

hey it worked before for me and is still working,

one more thing i believe wd40 dispells water ingress etc and it will run out of the barrell as it is not water tight. but the oil stays in better as it is thicker.

peace all
