when you say powers down do you mean cuts out or just loses power?
-
loses power i.e no turbo
-
i have a friend who used to work for Audi, will check....
does it chuck out smoke when it loses power?
what sort of mileage has it done?
-
yes to the smoke 70000miles ,when you turn off engine it seems to reset then powers down again
-
It's in some sort of limp mode (there are tons of limp modes). Need to get the fault codes read out and go from there.
Might just be a boost leak.
-
Possibly a holed intercooler hose.
-
i think the air flow sensor has been changed no differrence though
-
one of a couple of things.....
Wastegate is stuck open this could be caused by overboosting
Turbo is knackered
its drawing oil, normally due to the second one.....
It needs to be put on the reader, friend reckons you will get a fault code of overboost, if this is the case it is the wastegate
It is in limp mode though

No wastegate on these, VNT. Not stuck, because it turns off at 2K rpms. Boost leak would cause smoke due to over rich.

Just going with what the Audi tech told me.......
1st thing he advised....get the fault code read, he was putting money on the overboost, has seen it many time and it seems to be common

OK. Must be shutting of fuel not the turbo at 2K then. The turbos usually get pretty loud when they are knackered though.

if it does say overboost what would it mean parts/cost wise :question

Most likely turbo = £££s
you can get them recon'd which does save money
if the dealers are doing it tell him to lube up before taking the car down there, it will be painful ;)
they will bend him over and spank his backside, metaphorically speaking

And that will be just for plugging it into the diag kit......wait for the parts and labour bill :o
