Title: 2.5 tdi thermostat where is it?
Post by: pcd on 20 November 2010, 14:18:49
Hi everyone winter on its way and my 1996 2.5 tdi was not the warmest place to be last winter,so i have orderd new thermostat coz she seems to take ages to get hot,tem gauge never get close to 90,SO WANTED TO CHANGE THERMOSTAT.so before i do i had a quick look,if thats it just under the cam cover where the vacume pipe enters, it looks like a b_ _ _ _ _ d of a job! any advice, have tried the hold the top hose but got fed up after 30 mins,it was warm and the fan had cut in.

Not that hard to change. Just follow the top large radiator hose back to the engine and it's in the casting there :y

Dead easy, 15mins if you've been sensible enough to remove the viscous fan and ram it right up the stupid BMW designer's backside. Sideways. Whilst spinning.

As Welung666 says, follow bottom rad hose up, it sits in that plastic 90 degree elbow.

Use it as a good excuse to flush the cooling system - drain on rad and an engine drain just behind the turbo

We aim to confuse :y ;D ;D ;D

My error, sorry  :-[ I was working from memory so I've checked. The housing is mounted on the front of the engine behind and just above the fan, so that would be the bottom hose :y

Number 2 is the thermostat housing. Ignore the radiator layout as it's a range rover one :y

I've spent most if the morning fighting the viscous fan coupling! Nothing like the right tool for the job:

Having finally got the fan off, it's not going to be a dead easy job for me, I lack either the tools or skill to sort this out easily!  :(

Is there anyone in the Midlands area who fancies earning a few beer tokens, I can come to you!?

Sorry, I should point out now I've hijacked this thread that mine is a 2.5TD, not a TDI like the thread title says. :) I don't know how much of a difference there is? :-?

Assuming it's the same layout as the 2.5TD then you don't need to remove the viscous fan.
What you need to remove is the air filter housing, once that's out of the way everything is accessible from the drivers side of the engine.   :y

Yup, fortunately! Otherwise I'd probably still be there bashing it!

The daft thing is, it was removed about 6 weeks ago to replace the belts. I was going to leave it off but my helpful helper helpfully reinstalled it while I was making a cuppa.  ;D I love the way the thermostat waits until everything is put back together before giving up.

Ah, the law of sod, you'll come across it quite a bit owning an Omega  ;D

Once the fan is off:

Drain coolant (drain plug on rad, and one in block just aft of turbo)
Remove bottom rad hose
Remove 3 10mm bolts holding stat housing to block
Stat housing pulls away from block

Refit in reverse order :y

Refill antifreeze with 50:50 mix - system is mostly self bleeding, so let it idle for 20mins or so, but take a can of 50:50 mix out with you on your first journey as a precaution :y

Coolant capacity is 10 litres.
Best to put in a 5 litre can of Vx red antifreeze to achieve 50% strength.

Depends whats already in there ;)

Given that the TD can be fully drained, unlike any of the GM engines, makes sense to premix imho

Cheers, have got today off work for my birthday so will have another bash at this shortly. There is a pipe between the EGR pipe and the stat housing that makes access difficult, I can't get a socket on there.

Another quick question, I would search the forums but I'm on the mobile and its hard work, what is the capacity of the cooling system? I'm out and about and will buy some antifreeze on the way home  :)

Damn, you guys are fast! Takes too long to type on this!

Thanks!  :D

Shouldn't need to remove this, but if you do, there is 2 x 13mm bolts each end, and a small bracket near the stat.

The coolant transfer pipe, if I'm not mistaken, IIRC it is held by one 10mm bolt and pulls straight out, however you will have to release the bolts which secure it near the back of the block on the drivers side to allow some free movement. Watch out for the O ring on the pipe when you release it. The EGR pipe and air filter housing should also be removed to allow access.

Edit: Many happy returns.  :D ;D :y

I've never found I've had to remove coolant pipe to do a TD stat  :-/

Though, I've never had to remove egr pipe either  :-/

TB, I can only relate as to my own experience with my TD. The two pipes run right across the face of the thermostat housing, the housing won't come out until the transfer pipe is moved, the transfer pipe can't be moved until the EGR pipe is moved.

I can only imagine it was a different layout, maybe modified, that you came across.
I know it's not uncommon to remove the EGR pipe altogether when blanking off the valve, but the transfer pipe, hmmm   :-/

Mine was a X25DT engine, yours is borderline U25 or X25 (96 model more likely the later though), but I didn't think there were any changes around the stat/xfer pipe?

I removed the egr pipe just for ease of access and to ensure i can get in thee to clean surfaces properly whilst making sure new stat is sat properly, agreed though never had to move the other pipe?

And yours is a U25DT (assuming you still have the silver estate)

I will be tackling this job again very soon, (stat is on order) as my stat is appears to be stuck open.
I will of course do my best to get it out this time without removing pipes and report back.  :) :y
