Now have a fault code 0335 after miggy failed to start after many repeated attempts,now desperate, so thought Ill try again after about half an hour, and she started, this happened 70mls from home day before yesterday, she travelled back home and seemed ok, however earlier today I had a rather indefinite start, and engine tickover was slightly different.I have done a pedal test and got 10-3-3-5 flashes,which is (crankshaft position sensor "A"circuit malfunction) with referance to the pedal test fault codes.Any advice on the best plan of action would be much appreciated as I haven't experienced this sort of fault before,the cars done 90,000mls,the last 30,000 with yours truly driving and she's never missed a beat,thanks in anticipation :y

Classic symptoms of a crank sensor ...
Difficulty starting, then suddenly works... until one day it won't .. at all. :(
0335 confirms it .. needs changing .. :(
And its not too hard a job, new sensor is about £50 inc VAT on trade club if memory serves. Most important part is the routing of the new cable .. it is impossible to put it where the old one is .. so route it clear of exhaust.

Practickly normal on the omega, I keep a spare in the boot, as do others I believe...

Ah well,thanks all,my reaction is now relief,might seem strange with miggy sick,but a very welcome positive diagnosis,what great cars these are at letting you know what's wrong when backed up by knowledge and help from the members of this great forum, it's a winning combination,I'll be keeplng my Omega for a long time yet,sorry to go on,but needed to say some good stuff for a change, Once more thanks everybody will let you know how I go on :y :y :y

when I removed the cranksensor I was surprised to see on the end a cluster of oily iron fileings/swarf which gave the sensor almost the appearance of a magnetic sump plug,I do realise that the sensor must operate in fairly harsh conditions ie the starter bendix won't be that far away,and to my knowledge they do produce a certain amount of swarf.My concern is, is it normal for the sensor end to gather so much? Hopefully I will be collecting the new sensor tomorrow from the dealers (I just managed to get the order in before 3pm) also intend to get some spiral cable protection sleeve from Maplins for a Rolls Royce job

Iron filings is not something I'd want to find in a crankcase, and if stuck to the sensor, may be why it was misbehaving. :-/

Having recently had fitted a new crankshaft sensor can it be said how long it may last or is this completely random

yes I did wonder if the swarf on the end of the sensor could cause the malfunction, it was clustered on the central electrode (if you can call it that) I assumed that the sensor uses magnetic pulses so its possible any debris from the starter motor engageing with the flywheel ring could gather on it if this is not normal then I have some cause for concern.I'll remove the rubber inspection caps and get a bead light in to the bell houseing tomorrow.Can't say what the service life of the sensor is but I'd say it's like most electronic components same as how long is a piece of string

I've no idea whether this is correct for an Omega, but isn't starter motor ring-gear etc. normally outside the crankcase?
Hopefully someone far more clued up than me will confirm/deny.

As suggested the sensor consists of
a body containing a coil and a permanent magnet
which provides a magnetic field. It's not unknown to
find debris on the end of this. Cleaning and reseating
the sensor gives it a new lease of life.
Still, good idea to have a spare in the boot. :y

Yes I had it wrong,when I pulled the sensor and managed to look down hole (with the aid of a mirror) I saw a stator,seems Omega's have one bolted on the rear end of the crankshaft,this now really does give me cause for worry there has to be debris in the sump and where has it come from? So I feel I must start with a full hot oil drain with the car rear end up and see what it brings.I have fitted the new sensor and run Miggy on tickover and mild revs stationry up to full working temp and the engine runs and sounds super.If anyone more familier than I with the bottom end of the 3.2 can please throw up any suggestions or ideas it will be greatly appreciated.

How much is that? Is it okay to just buy from surplus parts or it is advised to buy brand new for that? What is the best brand for that crank position sensor (http://www.racepages.com/parts/crank_position_sensor.html)? Is there any guide on how to remove that on this thread? I just wanna save money and just asked a favor to my father in installing it. I just wanna avoid paying labor. ::)

I got mine from main dealer at a cost of £49.00 plus vat,and no trouble since, I'm certain that its best not to entertain a s/hand one,I looked for a maker on the sensor but however there was'nt one, on enquiry I understand it to be Bosch,the part No on my Inv is 90540743, you need to be carefull, as I believe there is 2 types I think the connectors are different, the dealer partsman used miggys VIN No to identify mine and it was ok,I left my original in position (ends taped up)and re-routed the new one away from the exhaust over to the bodywork side of the engine bay with the aid of the good old cable ties,have a look on this site and there are some good "how to" guides,There are members on here with far more knowledge than myself,and if I've got something not quite right hopefully they will correct things,Cris's avatar does for me ::)takes me back to my Sunbeam S8 days :y

Here is a guide on the Crankshaft Sensor. When replacing this it is advised to use only genuine vauxhall parts. You will find many more useful guides in the maintenance section. :y
