Title: Exhaust Blowing, Poss from the manifold?
Post by: Homer_S on 14 December 2010, 09:48:09
Hi All

I have a noisy exhaust and smell of exhaust fumes in the engine bay. Cant see any obvious holes in the exhaust at the front so I suspect its from the manifold or something. Haynes manual says I have to strip down the top of the engine to get to it, not a nice job outside in this weather as I suspect it will take some time!
Is there an 'easier' way to check or is there somewhere else I should look first? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Another member on here had problems that he thought were a manifold gasket leak, but turned out to be a rubber pipe connection on the secondary air injection system.  Driver's side, I seem to remember, there's a short length of rubber hose linking up two metal pipes.  This was the source of his blow.  Another member was recently advised to check the same bit of hose for the same problem, and it was the culprit.

Possibly/probably caused by a partially blocked cat on that side.

Worth a look/feel, I'd say.  :y

Thanks Abiton, I managed to find that topic now, unfortunately its not that pipe.
Just spent a while listening to the engine and I am now not sure where its coming from, could be there rear/top of engine.

That was me! I ended up changing the drivers side gasket when it turned out to be the rubber pipe on the SAI pipework, then someone else had the same problem. Can you not hear where the leak is coming from? Get your head under the bonnet with the engine running to try and find it, feel around the pipe for the hole. I'll try to find the link for pictures and post it back up. If it is the manifold gasket it can be done by removing the plenum, manifold, SAI pipe and a few other things, very fiddly and awkward but doable. You certainly don't have to take the engine apart! I should write a little guide on this.

what is the condition of the downpipes and are they bolted to the manifolds fully?

Try the full SAI pipes and the opposite side. You could have a failed non return valve for the exhaust gases, it can be very misleading when trying to locate the source of a noise.
