Title: Tyres size
Post by: Shackeng on 06 December 2010, 17:38:54
The tyres fitted to my TD are 225 55 16's. I would like to fit some winter tyres to my spare alloys, same size at present. What variation in size, (I'm looking at part worns) can these wheels, which were OE, accept. :-? :-? :-?

If it twere me I'd stick to the same size as the manufacturer intended.
Also be aware that if you don't have four of the same size tyres on the car you may confuse the a.b.s. system.

no need for 225, if I were you I'll go for 205 or max 215..

no need for wide expensive tires in winter..

That's the question I was asking, what variations can the OE wheels accept. :-?

Some 225's on ebay, £89 a set, but only 3-4mm left, so not really worth it.

winter tires must have a min 5mm tread depth to be deemed good! my habdbook only gives 225/55/16 as OEM for the 16's so i geuss you could put on thinner tyres but i don't know how it would affect your handling remember the snow won't be there the whole winter and then you'll be driving around on morris minor wheels!!

even a 195 size "good quality" winter tire with enough thread can beat 235 summer tire on wet..

and for dry .. wont be big difference.. as the winter tires have also small teeths for extra grip..

Hello
I believed that an important thing here is the load index of the tyres. In my owners manual (car bought here in Finland, which belongs to EU) following tyres are recommended:
195/65R15 91V
205/65R15 94V
225/55R16 94V
235/45R17 93V
Lowest load index here is 91 which means (table found in internet) 615 kg/tyre. According to the owners manual max axle loads are 1080 kg in front and 1155 kg in rear. Seems to be logical if I understood it correctly. So perhaps the tyres with too low load index are not safe.

Shouldn't do, mine is on 205's as standard (GLS Spec)...  Just remember to change the profile...
