When the heater is set to automatic recirculate or just recirculate a flap in the dash in front of the passenger periodically opens (shuts?) with an almighty thump. Scares me half to death ;D
Has any one had this before? What do I look for and how do I calm it down?
I have tried turning the radio up but I think I aught to sort it out ::) ::)

Mine does that and it makes quite a loud 'whump' :o......not automatically though; only when I operate the re-circ. button.
It`s simply a vacuum servo-motor moving the flap, so if it`s doing it spasmodically, then perhaps there`s a vacuum leak, or associated vacuum-valve/feed/pipe-issue. :-/

Thanks Debs. I will see if it does it on auto recirc or just recirc on the way to work tonight. You have made me wonder now ;)

the flap should have a sponge rubber edging to prevent this noise, it probably nothing more than the edgine having dropped off.
you can see it under the glove box
-
if i pass some area of smoke or somethin simillar i press the recirculation button but nothing really happens. i stil get smoke or smell throught the air vents >:(. on my old astra when i pressed tghere was nothing comeing through. the auto function is the same deal ::)

Try this Tonka:
steady acceleration up a hill for as long as possible then come off the throttle completely....if the heater goes thump as you close the throttle then you have a vacuum fault.
Likely culprit is a faulty non-return valve on the heater vacuum tank (beside pollen filter) or a hole worn in the pipe from vacuum tank to the bulkhead. Other possibilities are dislodged pipes behind dash but unlikely unless you have had the glovebox or centre panel out recently.

Thanks Guys. Will look at it and report back :y :y

Just had a look.
The rubber seal around the flap (more a third of a rotating barrel than a flap ::)) was sticking to the plastic moulding. This made it fly open with such velocity it banged into the shut position when first used, then once free it became quieter
Gave it a good wipe down with silicon spray on a rag. Damn the thing ;D ;D
That should shut it up :y :y

I was wrong.........still thumping, yet working as it should :-? :-?

where did you looked?? i want to check mine too

If you can stop it thumping on its first operation, let me know ;D ;D

There was a thread on this very problem about a month or so back, but for the life of me I can't find it. I do remember it was resolved.
Forgive me if I'm mistaken but seem to recall something about the secondary air injection.
Try unplugging it and see what happens, can't do any harm. So if I'm wrong you are no worse off.
