Title: Ever had this fault? autobox
Post by: hoj on 18 December 2010, 18:18:43
Whilst driving today in our lovely British weather i thought i would be sensible and use the gearbox more often NOT have it just in "D" set off in 1st easy on the gas use the wintermode button etc etc.
However car seemed to get stuck in 1 gear wouldnt kick down even drove in neutral and every light would light up for a second also the display showed "automatic gearbox" .
5 miles later turned off left then came back and all seems fine.
Did i possibly fool the car into thinking it was in say 1st or 2nd gear whilst i was going through the gears into drive (a little to quickly perhaps?) or could it be something more serious.
Cheers all.

Would suggest incorrect use of the autobox and has confuddled the ECU.

Either a) use 1st gear/2nd gear/3rd gear hold - thats manually moving the gear selector - or b) use the snowflake button in drive.

The latter requires the car to move off in 3rd gear whilst the former restricts the gearbox to a 1st gear limit/2nd gear limit etc.

Box cannot satisfy both competing commands at the same time and has thrown a rod, so to speak.

Perhaps it will sort itself out when used as per the handbook....   ;)   :y

did you turn snow button off afterwards? It pulls off in 3rd, so it won't change like it normally does...

 ;D ;D ;D Cant remember what i did actually  ;D ;D ;D
Put it in 1st and set off but think i may have changed from 1st to D to quickly.
The snow button seemed to go out by itself i definately didnt switch it off myself anyway AGAIN this maybe because i changed gears up and down to quickly

Just read the manual (for a change)

The transmission no longer shifts automatically.
Driving can be continued.Second gear is not available,Engage first, third and fourth gear manually using selector lever.

To have the fault rectified consult a VX Dealership.

WHAT FAULT IS IT??? that is my question.

I spent a few years at a volvo dealership and they call it the pnp switch. It's filled with a petroleum bases lubricant which in cold weather changes viscosity hampering operation, we used to rapidly move the gear selector between P and 1 30 times and this used to (90%) clear the fault. This would give the customer about another years worth of operation before refurb is required. Worth a try as it's free.

Why did you ask this?
The reason I ask is that sometimes my selector lights flash on start up for a couple of seconds and then goes off but I don't seem to have any problems  :-?

That's not normal. Selector switch possibly, but tech 2 to interrogate first IMO. Same for op.
