Title: do i have one?
Post by: griff2494 on 22 December 2010, 11:01:54
hi there again

right can some one please tell me 100% does my 2002 2.2 sport with auto box have a HBV ???

ive looked and looked and cant see one  :-? :-? :-?

also car startes to mis when warm could this be
1.  a spark plug going down?
2.  coil pack breaking down? (how can i test? ive done the wire/earth test and it sparks but thats not under load/warm)

Hi Griff,

Yes your car does have a Heater Bypass Valve. It's located at the rear of the engine bay, drivers side. In my personal opinion, it's a little harder to get to on the 2.2 than the V6, and sometimes is easier to access from underneith, depending on the position of the clips.

In terms of the misfire, do you have any fault codes stored? The 2.2 DBW (Drive by Wire) engine will detect and record misfires, so this should help in the troubleshooting process.

Nonetheless, ensure the plugs are changed as per schedule (which I believe is 40,000 miles).

(Apologies if I'm missing something, as I've not read your other threads in any detail).

Kind regards,
James

hi again

thanks for your reply :-)
i will keep looking then :-)
as for the mis fire im not sure when they where last changed as only had the car a short while, was told they where changed not long ago but looking at them im not to sure lol they look old to me,3 seem to look like they should as in nice colour but one is black/wet like not firing correctly

as for code stored my orange light is perm on on the dash(the emission one, well thats what my book says it is )
ive bought a "My Naff Code Reader" reader 2 weeks ago but still not here yet :-(

also tried the pedal test but does not work :-( (read it may or maynot work on my car, sods law it does not)

Hi Griff,

The Heater Bypass Valve will have one pipe going into it, from the back of the engine - and two going out. Depending on the heater control settings in the cabin, it will either route the incoming hot water into the car, for heat, or will bypass the car, and circulate the water directly around the cooling system instead. (Hence it's name). You have one, without question.

If you look at the bulkhead (back of the engine bay) on the drivers side, you'll see two rubber pipes going 'into' the car. Follow the shorter one of these, and it will take you to a black component that some people describe as looking like a 'spaceship'. This device will also have a small vaccum pipe on the top of it.

This is your HBV. Have a good look around for signs of leakage, and test it with the heater set to both hot and cold with the engine running.

In terms of the wet plug, is it wet with oil, or wet with petrol? I have seen in another thread you say the car is throwing out muck from the exhaust, can you describe this more, as it's likely the two symptoms are related?

I appreciate you're waiting for a reader, but you do really need to find the fault codes before you can progress your troubleshooting.

I would recommend when the reader arrives, you read, write down, and then reset all of your codes before doing anything. Then run/drive the car and see what comes back, and work on this basis.

Reason for this, is that by doing the various tests you've done (checking for spark etc) you will have potentially generated codes unrelated to the original fault, and wouldn't want this to become a red-herring for you.

If you get no further following the codes, as a next step, it might be worth a compression test.

Kind regards,
James

Take a look at the pic below.  It's the chunk bolted to the rear of your engine's head, which has the coolant outlet (far right of pic) which will be going either to your HBV, or direct to the matrix inlet if you have no HBV.  Note that your 'chunk' won't have a DIS bolted to the top of it, and the EGR will look different on your 2.2 versus the 2.0 set-up pictured.

If there's a single hose going from that coolant outlet to the matrix and nowhere else, then your HBV has been removed, relocated, or never fitted.  I thought all 2.2s had aircon (and therefore an HBV), but maybe not?

Griff, if you think that's bad you should see mine!!! I would take a video & post it but all you would see was a wall of steam cloud! If your HG ever does go (as mine did early last year) you will immediately know the difference mate, trust me! ;D :y

Missing and lots of steam, mine was the head gasket :( :( judging bu the amount of smoke/steam coming out of that car it is NOT the head gasket....that's normal.... :)

well after looking and looking ive finaly found the HBV on my car :-)

its dont fastened to the back of the block or anything its danging free and without looking hard you cant see it as its tooked down behind the heater matrix pipes

have not changed it yet as it looks like it will be a total TW.T to get to :-(

but i cant seem to see any signs of leakage from it,theres no tell tale marks around the pipe work, but i checked the water level again when i went out and its def going somewhere lol just dont no where

it is very strange as if a pipe was leaking/dripping surly in this weather you would see because of the cold air ie steam?
