Title: Spark plug shroud / boot stuck and broken.
Post by: V6 CDX-er on 22 December 2010, 13:44:25
So far, if it can go wrong, it usually has done  :'(

Rearmost spark plug shroud on bangs 2/4/6 (passenger side) is stuck fast. I managed to get the DIS-PAC out, but the rubber boot over the spark plug stayed put.

I've tried twisting, pulling, prying, popping, all sorts, but it's stuck fast, and rapidly falling to pieces at the top, which is of course going to making getting it of ever more difficult.

Any suggestions please chaps (once again, sorry)

Work a small flat screwdriver down between the boot and the plug and work it around the plug, this should release the boot.  :y

A thin, long electrical screwdriver gently in between the plug and shroud and work it around. The heat will have stuck the degrading rubber boot to the plug ceramic :y

[edit]DAMN, too slow! ;D[/edit]

Thank you both. I was giving that a try pre-lunch, but without much success. I'll give it another try now that I'm not so angry / fed-up.  :y

Spray a little lube (WD or PTFE) inside the boot and let it sit for 5 minutes before trying again as well :y

Thanks for the advice chaps. Much appriciated  :y

I've got the offending item off. However, it does seem to be a little damaged. May I ask, in your opinions, is this too damaged to put back on? Only the top appears distorted, and a small section (about 25%) of the very upper of the three lips, (which I assume act as grips against the cylinder head wall?).

I'd say that is pretty well knackered...

Goosed! Nick a spare from the scrappy or get another made up at local factors, would only be a few quid

These are the boots off the 2.6/3/2 Dispacks (One per bank and sit in centre over the plugs), unfortunately not the same as spark plug boots on leads.  :y

I believe the boots are available as spares from a stealer? or you could ask one of the breakers on here if they have one lying around? :y

Cheers. I've already phoned both my local dealers, assuming that they would be an item that was available individually. Alas, seems not.

Rubber boot for the spark plug sir? That'll be £112  :o But you do get a coil pack free of charge.

As others have said, think I'll try the scrappys / ebay / someone on here.

No real rush though. As I made a mess of grinding the casting steps out of my throttle body, I've had to send it off for machining, and that won't be back for another couple of weeks. in the meantime that leaves plenty of access to the dis-pac, which now it's been off once, should come off again pretty easily.

Cheers, for the advice fellas. Wishing a merry xmas to you all.  :y
