Title: missing key chip
Post by: Impact Pete on 29 December 2010, 14:05:25
My dad told me his astra would not start and after a bit of diagnostic he admitted the key had fell apart, I checked the key and sure enough the chip is missing, we cannot find it anywhere, at least I stopped an expensive garage recovery happening tomorrow, but his garage did say it has to be done via vauxhall, they send a chip etc.

can anyone confirm this and the possible cost and if there is another option, my dad is in his 70's and is pretty embarrassed by it all so I want the best outcome. :-/

Pretty much so. I assume your Dad has just the one key then. I believe you're looking at £30-ish for Vauxhall to programme a new key which comes with a chip, how much they'll charge for just a chip on its own I don't know. Plus obviously you'll need to get the car to Vauxhall.
I'd ask around local auto sparks though to see if they can code a key for you before I asked Vx.

If you can get the car to Marks DTM Calib, and you have the carpass, you will find him much cheaper and far more compitent.

I will go up and have a look for the car pass, MarkDTM is in Nottingham I think so not far, I expect my dad at his age may be reluctant to do so tho. We spent 2 hours scouring his drive even clearing out drain on the drive, just glad the I spotted the problem before the garage charged him for diagnostic work

You can buy a blank key on fleebay which will have a chip but you then have to get it cut and programmed. I implore all members to have 2 keys, I personally have 3 to be sure.
