Title: Exhaust manifold gaskets
Post by: Gaffers on 05 January 2011, 18:01:55
Is there a how-to and I take it GM only?

For the cost I would only use GM. About £9 (for one) when I got mine ordered. They are multi layered steel.

It depends which side you are doing, if it's the offside i can knock up a how to, it's been a while though. I've got some pics i took aswell. I know i should've made a how to before with my pics but i don't like to remind myself of the job!

Incidentally, if it's blowing, check your SAI pipe (in particular the 3 inch bridging section) isn't burnt through, which could be the source of the noise.

I have not fully investigated yet but my emmissions were up on the last MOT and in reverse I get a very loud blow from the offsite.  I would prob change both just for peace of mind and get myself some 2.6/3.2 manifolds at the same time.  I hear they are better?

I have heard that 2.6 and 3.2 manifolds are better, don't know why though.

I would defo check the SAI pipe though. Mine started blowing, and got an exhaust manifold gasket as an advisory on my MOT. I changed it, but it turned out to be the SAI pipe, doh!

I could've saved myself two horrible days!

Nearside IIRC needs engine mount undone and engine lifted

You're right Rob, but I actually find that the easier of the two sides to do. I think it's because my left wrist isn't as knackered as my right  so I end up laying with my feet towards the rear of the car to get at the top nuts on the O/S.
