Hi All, im still new to forum and its unfortunate i have to ask for help so immediatly
I think the headgasket has gone but its a wierd one, here are the key points:
AA mans compression test came back all perfect
oil/water has not mixed together
it is running on 3 cylinders
oil burinig smell/smoke coming from manifold side
It is pushing out WHITE smoke - thats what has made me alert!
I have changed the plugs but no joy - it is still running on 3 cylinders, and kicking out white smoke
AA man also pointed out that the spark plug coilpack/module that sits on top of the rocker cover could have packed in
What worries me the most is the white smoke. I used to run a Sapphire cosworth many moons a go which lost power and kicked out white smoke which kead to a NEW head and failed headgasket and cost a fair wack
thanks in advanced guys :y

oil burning smell = rocker gaskets which is probably cause of misfire :y
-
Are you losing oil?
Are you losing coolant?
Are either of them a different colour to normal?
Are the rubber boots on the coil pack complete and not cracked?
The oil/burnig smell could be the cam cover seal gone and leaking oil onto the zorst manifold. It could be the coil pack causing the miss. Did the useless knob AA man find any fault codes?
-
As Welung666 says a small oil weep from the cam covers can cause a big oily smell and a misfire.
A misfire can cause unburnt fuel (and air) to go down the exhaust to the catalytic converter (which seems to be one way of producing clouds of exhaust vapour)
Fix the cam cover gasket and misfire before condeming the headgasket.

i'd go with what wellung says... he's just spent a few hours doing my head gasket and what a brilliant job !! :y
-
thanks for the response guys
I did the rocker gasket a while a go and checked it again yesterday and the seal is still good, no leaks, the oil burning/smoke smell is coming from further down. ign module could be a possibility how can i test that?
What about the white smoke? what could that be as it looked like i set the bush behind the car on fire ::)

i havent checked the rubber boots yet,
oil and water are not being lost and are normal colours, oil is fresh

AA boy didnt check fault codes, i do know the lambda sensor needs replacing though

update and pics!
no smoke from side of manifold anymore, white smoke still there its looking like it could be the coil module, have a look it seems like the internals could be burnt out?

Those boots look wet! Are the plug wells clear or do they have fluid in them?
-
the boots are wet with oil, the spark plugs are wet, the AA man bought that up with me too - he goes there is oil down the spark plug hole
-
It appears your Cam gasket is leaking oil into the plug orifices! Also, it looks like one of the plug cover boots has a piece broken off? This could cause spark tracking & if one of those plugs is/was a loose fit, it would allow oil into the combustion chamber thereby making smoke? :-/

Exactly right Phil :y
Clean all the oil out of the plug wells. Make sure the plugs are fitted correctly. Remove the rubber boots and clean well with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly, refit them and the coilpack and try again :y
You'll need the cam cover gasket re-doing with a genuine Vx seal, o rings and black sealant and torqued down to the correct setting otherwise it will just leak again.

guys, cheers for pinpointing! experts or what :y
it hasnt been long since fitting the rocker cover gasket, saying that i didnt use any sealent or torque it down as i do not have a torque wrench...
wonder why its still running on 3 cylinders :-?
Welung666 i am only down the M40 from you in slough, could you come out and have a look and fix please? :P

Gladly up until you mentioned you were in Slough ;D No offence meant but it would be a very cold day in hell before I step foot in Slough again ;D
The misfire is because the oil is leaking the spark away from the plug and onto the head :y

Hey now, nowt wrong with Slough. I'm pretty sure the place got much classier when I left.. ;D

Haha touché! Fair enough mate shame though would like the car to get a check over by an expert. What torque is the rocker cover screwed down to?il have to get hold of a Torque wrench

8nm (practically finger tight) :y
I'll look it over gladly just head my way a bit, somewhere like Oxford services on the M40. Anyway once you've cleaned the oil out of the wells, re-seated the plugs and cleaned and refitted the coil pack the car will drive as normal anyway.
-
kewl il do all that next couple of days, will defo get a new rubber sleeve too, it could even be down to that!
give me a day or so and il update ya :y
-
Update!
New sleeves put in, i have used sealent and cleaned things up.
Its doing some strange things: it doesnt run on 3 cylinders all of the time only when you put ur foot down fast it misses, steering has been going heavy and light, then at one point the oil light came on it went tick tick tick then steering went really heavy, then it went back to normal!
White smoke hasnt stopped...i think i need to take it to a garage...
-
DONT WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT THE WHITE SMOKE, THE VERY COLD TEMPS WE ARE EXPERIANCING AT THE MOMENT WILL PRODUCE WHITE SMOKE FROM THE TAIL PIPE. SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS LOCK. Your coil pack could well be fubered and is causing the missfire so that is your No one concern as far as i am concered, if the compression test was ok then it is not head gasket related.
-
Thanks Gary
I will have a look if there are any modules for sale :y

The heavy steering..... is it only when manoevering at low speed ie. parking?
Is your oil level up to the full mark on your dipstick? If yes, then the oil light coming on & getting a ticking noise is a bit worrying as it may indicate the oil pickup/strainer is getting blocked by crud in the sump & causing temporary oil starvation :-/ If no, then top it up ASAP! The only way to be sure & get peace of mind is to remove the sump pan & physically check/clean everything? :-/
