Some previous owner has bypassed the front vac tank, I am getting the big boost over 4000 rpm but would this prevent some other ram type thingy working? there are 2 multi rams aren't there?

I thought my multi rams weren't working right as I get a huge surge at 4k also (I thought it's supposed to smoothen the torque curve!).

I checked their operation and they're fine. Have a look at the Multi ram section in maintenance guides, and check yours are working also.

I'm not sure about it affecting anything else, but as far as i know the vac operates HBV, brake servo, and multi rams, so if they're working ok, great!

If the reservoir is not there, or the non-return valve is faulty, the vacuum supply will disappear when the throttle is open. So, the valves might work at idle but not at full load.

Sounds like you need a new reservoir.  A good way to test is to remove the line from the reservoir to the front multiram solenoid shortly after stopping the engine. You should hear a hiss as the pressure equalises. If you have a vacuum gauge you can connect this here and check that the system holds vacuum.
