mate of mine has just asked
whats the review for a 2.5 cdx omega how many miles to the gallon etc and what should I look for
2.5petrol
I'm looking at a T reg manual with 180,000 on the clock no faults listed full spec inside leather climate etc etc
being as i aint keen on the petrol omegas though i would throw it out here for you experts to advise me

our 3.0 manual gets mid 20's round town, low to mid 30's on a run
-
My 2.5 gives about 22 to 25 round town and goes up to about 32 to 33 on a gentle run.
A heavy right foot makes a huge difference!

hmm he does have rather large feet at times!!

no worries about the high mileage then? is the 2.5 petrol a good engine? no worries on flywheels etc? i really know very little about them!!
-
you should get 30mpg even in town, 36 on a long run if you are careful. however if you are "spirited" could go as low as low 20s
2.5 manual is about best for performance economy.

High milage is a non issue so long as oil changes and cambelt changes have been done on time

And the water pump. My old 2.5 CDX expired 8 miles after I sold it. Water pump was leaking and I told him it wouldnt get far. It let go after about 5 miles and he drove it another 2 or 3 before the engine seized.....

23-24 urban , 32-33 on a "normal" run..
depends on the traffic though..
but seen 9mpg avg continous hammering ;D

my 2.5 cdx does approx 25-28mpg town 30-33mpg 70mph motorway and approx 25-28mpg 100+ motorway driving (didnt say that) :P its on a t plate and done 150,000 but regular oil changes and cambelt just been done :y

As has been said, mileage not necessarily a problem if it's been looked after. Neglected oil changes will block the breathers and cause the cam cover gaskets to fail. Not a desperate problem to fix, but a good bartering point. Worth a few quick oil changes to clean it out, and a clean of the breather system if the current oil looks a bit tired.
Likewise, neglected coolant causes the oil cooler to corrode and you get oil in the coolant. Play the "it's the head gasket" card to beat the price down then swap the oil cooler. Parts a little over £100 for that job. :y
Can also corrode the oil cooler cover plate and cause a leak. Coolant leaks from the head gaskets not unheard of, again, caused by neglected coolant.
Cam belt must be done every 40k / 4 years. Not a difficult job for a man of your calibre but another bartering point. :y
Multiram system can often fail or the vac pipes be damaged / badly connected. Not an issue to fix normally.
Might find a noisy SAI blower under the passenger side wheel arch. Not an issue, can be disconnected / removed.
Exhaust manifold gaskets can blow, and are awkward to change. Especially noticeable for the first few seconds after a cold start.
Does have a DMF but the relatively small number of issues we see suggests it's reliable. If it's on the original clutch that might not be long to this world, of course.
Check all the panel lights come on and extinguish individually after engine start. ABS/TC failure not unknown, so check speedo works reliably. Might be worth taking a paperclip and reading the guide to code reading.
Other than that, I'm sure you're aware of all the body / chassis issues, G. :y
