Title: So I have a Nokia N95...
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 20 January 2008, 21:57:03
... what do I do with it?

So far I've only ever used a phone to call and text, seems this one is capable of a lot more!!

I have TomTom mobile, along with full UK maps and postcodes.

Full European maps, with postcodes, and campsites!

I also have FULL road maps for TomTom for the USA  :)

Although these are 5GB, so you can only take the states you need.

Tried the barcode reader? Under Tools i think or office, is the 3D barcode reader  :)

I guess you could video the EML flashing and knock up an application to decode the flashing and list the faults.

Not a chance on Symbian fones, but might have a crack on a Windows phone.

Again the trouble is the COM port...

The trouble is the cheapo tech2 software... its looking for a COM port, we have enough trouble trying to make them work with USB to COM.
adaptors!

Has anyone got cheapo tech2 to work on Linux?

Yep thats what I thought. Be nice for fault finding though, drive around logging data to a pda then post it for the experts to look at.

That's very interesting John. Looks like its about £200 for the dongle with some software. I've sent them an email for more info. I'll post here when I find out more.  :y

I've got it to work on the old Nokia Symbian phones.  Windows Phones can be problematic with the security settings.  Orange phones can be unlocked through the orange developers site enabling them to run other software ie TomTom fine.

Going back on topic ;) . James it also has a decent (for a mobile) web browser and has wifi so it is free too (once you find a free provider).

With the right firmware upgrade (God it is so much better with the upgrade!) you can also make phonecalls using VOIP (not tried it, but noticed it is there).

MP3 player is ok (not a patch on the SE phones).

Dowload some impressive games.

Tons of other things like organisers etc in there.

Just start with upgrading the damn firmware!

The cheapo tech 2 implements a (non-rs232) serial connection by bit-bashing the handshaking lines in software rather than using the UART. Something like USB, Bluetooth, etc. will affect the timing of these signals (which aren't usually that time-critical in the intended application) so they simply won't work with the cheapo Tech 2 software. This is why it's also very sensitive to CPU speed.

There are a few open source code reader projects around if you're interested. The key is to move the handling of the interface off the PC, though, because PCs don't do real-time under any mainstream OS.

If the interface specs were in the public domain I'd probably have implemented it in a PIC by now...

Once the real-time stuff is off the PC it'd be easy to use bluetooth, etc.

Sorry. Looks like we're off topic again.. :-[

Reset it. Reset it some more. Send it back for repair. Reset it again. Send it back. Get bored, get an older Nokia which is reliable.

As KW says, you'd need to offload the intelliegnece off the cpu (a mobile cpu hasn't enough grunt), and use the phone purely for display.

And the hungarian software would never run under WinCE anyway, not without very significant (ie full rewrite) changes - those who have done WinCE programming via WFC (not .NET!) will know exactly what I'm talking about ;)

Exactly.

In fairness, some of Nokia's newer non-Symbian phones are fairly reliable, but even some of them have their quirks.

To be fair though Windows Mobile can have it's moments and need resetting fairly often, probably cause I usually fill the memory up with stuff though.  :D

The one I have now is pretty good, rarely reset it.  Most of the resets are done because something stops, but then turns out to be hardware problem.

I would say mine gets reset perhaps every 3 months on average....
