This maintenance guide with photos could be helpful

You don't need to remove pipe immediately in front of it.

Thanks lads, I am a bit worried about losing the air-con, sounds like the pipe has to be removed? The maint. guide is useful, thanks. Not sure how to remove the viscous fan, how do I stop the thing turning?

Thanks TB, I intend getting rid of the viscous fan too, how do you stop the coupling turning while you undo the 32mm hex? Or is it just the actual fan blades that come off?

Glen, just put a spanner on the viscous nut at 5 mins past the hour, and give it a clockwise 'whack' with a hammer.

The complete fan assembly can then be undone/withdrawn.

If yours has the cowling fitted, then it'll need to be removed with the fan!

HTH ;)

You might be lucky with just a spanner but I needed a tool to stop the fan rotating.

Some people say you can just wedge a big screwdriver in to do it.

I used a Sealey Viscous Fan Holding Tool VS095 & then a mere tap with a sledgehammer on the spanner did the trick.

you probably know, but just in case, remember it's a left hand thread.  My old td's viscous was on so tight i ended up having to cut it off, although i was replacing the water pump at the time, so didn't need to keep the shaft in one piece.

Fan is now off, (actually I removed it yesterday but didn't have time to post) Thanks to all, yes the left hand thread is something to remember, mine came adrift easily with a couple of sharp taps with Harry the hammer. Thanks to all.
p.s. my temp is now going up more of the time, nearing normal, but I have a thermostat now so will replace.  :y
