Title: coolant leak rear right of plenum-cam cover gasket
Post by: doug4293 on 09 February 2011, 23:36:38
just doen the rocker cover cam covers tonight, they needed sone as oil was getting into spark plugs and dripping onto exhaust, now when i noticed they needed done, i initially thought the spray of misty stuff then the puff of smoke/steam from the reat right of the plenum was oil from the cam covers, hence changed them, on completion let the car heat up, no drips of oil, but when revved hardish to over 4000, the same from rear right of plenum (near side) light spray, after doing it a few times i can see its definatly coolant, but cant see exactly where it could be coming from, also once the car was moved there was a puddle of coolant on the floor, has anyone had this before, it looks like its a strip down of the plenum again and check the hoses and the thermostat housing, but if any one can shed any light might point me in the right direction.

From what you have said it could be either the HBV or one of the pipes off the coolant bridge... the thermostat is at the front of the enginbe so cant see it being that being honest mate :y

ahh, right, anyone got a picture of the hbv so i can see what it looks like, also whats the blue plug going into the centre of the rear of the engine you can see when plenums off, as i thought it was the thermostat.

HBV is under the bottom of the drivers side of the windscreen. Looks a bit like a black starship enterprise. About the size of a fist.
Cant think what the blue plug is from memory tbh. :-/

Start off by checking the HBV, and take it from there.  :y

great, that lets me get into that area (removing the wipers and plastic scuttle) without taking the plenum off, so i can run the car and look down here to try and see exactly where the leaks from.

Blue plug that goes into what looks like a water gallery? IIRC from the other weekend, that's the temperature sensor plug :)

found it, its the pipe on the hbv that goes to the engine inbetween the two heads, have replaced it with another piece of pipe i have handy, although its not the same shape, will this be oky, or is the origonal pipe shaped the way it is (a square circular shape) to dampen the flow of the coolant ?
