Title: Re:Omega Diesel won't start
Post by: 350sb on 13 February 2011, 14:52:22
Hi Guys,

I desparately need help with my tractor.
I went to turn the key in the ignition last night and the engine wouldn't turn, like there was no battery connected.I  checked the battery connections and they were all fine. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it again, but this time the dash lights that go off once you start the car stayed on without the key in the ignition. There is also an issue with one of the relays clicking on and off.
What is the cause here?

Thanks

Shaun :(

change the battery with a friends one or try some jump leads from another car

Hi,

Swapped the battery and still the same problem, i.e. the dash lights that are meant to go off are still on without the key. Also, there are no clicks when turning the key.

Have you done any work on the car at all before this problem started.

I only fitted a "Hot start fix" from Tawpark 4x4 back in August last year. Apart from that, I've been removing the battery to put on charge since the cold weather started. :(

If the dash lights are still on its an earth fault.
Get a set of jump leads connect to the negative on battery and the other end to the engine and also using the other jump lead connect from the negative to the ecu which sits under the cover next to the battery :y

Securely clamp one end of a jump lead to the NEGATIVE (-) battery terminal, then securely clamp the other end to a suitable point on the engine itself (such as a manifold nut/stud).
See what happens.

Your symptoms make me strongly suspect an earthing problem here ;)

Hi do you recommend the "hot start fixing"?

I tried the jump lead test and the lights don't go off but remain on. There is a relay that keeps clicking when connecting/disconnecting the battery as I disconnect the battery when locking the car.
Is it possible that the ignition could be stuck in a certain position? It happened when i turned the ignition key but felt no click.

The hotstart fix has worked fine until my current appeared but I was advised by Jeremy Fern that the pump will need to be reconditioned at some stage. It will lead to a loss in power and I wish there was a rebuild kit out there for it.

oooh, ok think i know what has happened here, this is an old fault that has affected a few omega diesels,
before i go any further the power sounder has been thrown ?
just to eliminate that!!!

ok looking at the battery from the top look down till you see 2 or 3 large connectors just above the abs unit, if you get your hand down there and follow the top most brake line you will probably find that it has been rubbing on the cables, eventually the insulation rubs through and the wires connect through the brake pipe, this causes a dead short through the ignition, which is probably why your ignition is still on? if you remove the battery its easier to see the cable connectors are clipped in and are easily unclipped to check the wires im on about!!

lol just read it back and it does sound a little awkward but it is understandable to me!! there was a post i did on this proabably 3  years ago now but i cant find it !!

Omegatoy,

It's either I can't find these wires or I'm lost.
When you say looking from the battery down, which connectors am I to look for?
How do I paste pictures in this message?
I've disconnected what I think is the powersounder or siren, but the lights still stayed on and forgot to mention previously the fuel gauge was also on.
Please help me, as I desparately need this car on the road asap.

damn this is hard to explain!! ok leaning over the top of the battery and looking between the turret and the battery is where the bunch of connectors is , directly below the wires is the ABS unit, until you unclip the holders and look at the wires you cannot tell if it has been chaffing against the brake pipe? does that make sense?

Try following the wires thats coming out the side of the fuse box and passes over the oil filter cap and goes round the back of the engine to the bulk head.
You said in a previous post that a relay was clicking was it in the fuse box in the engine bay or the car.
Another thing to do is take the small wire off the top of the fuel pump(start-stop solinoid) and try to start the engine to rule out the start-stop solinoid.
look at the first photo between the green arrow and where the injector pipes connect to thats the start-stop solinoid

This one's realy weird it has to be a bad earth or a electrical component earthing out.
The only other thing that might be causing this that I can think of is the glow plugs or the wiring to them has shorted out

The clicking is coming from one of the 3 relays in the picture above ,i.e. the 2 green ones or the brown one.I tried removing the black one and connected the battery but it made no difference.

Guys,
I think I've found the fault. It's the ignition barrel!
I opened the 2 covers around the indicator/wiper stalks and pulled the electronic side of the ignition barrel and found it stuck in position3. The metal shaft that links the key to the ignition rotary switch is broken.
