I have put off asking this question as I don't want to come across as to much of a know nothing fool but here goes.
2.5 CDX purred along for many years a quiet drive and at those higher motorway speeds
2.6 version recently acquired. Growls beautifully, impresses my son in law who loves his cars but blimey a run down to London last week showed how noisy the car is.
Is this it?
Or...
Is the car possible tuned up?
A special exhaust? (exhaust is fine with no holes or leaks.)
Still purrs when on idle though
Any thoughts from the team out there?

Either a S/steel custom exhaust/rear box or cheapo replacement

Could be a flexi pipe starting to leak.
When it was leaking on my old Delta 1.6 it was ok on idle but when the throttle was pressed it sounded like a V12 with a lousy sport rear exhaust.
Half of the town could hear me ;D

Thankfully it is not that loud Mathew but is does growl whilst pulling away and tries to move a little faster than expected!

I'd go with an el cheapo replacement, my elite went from a nice purr to god awful noise when I put the Bosal exhaust on.

I agree, a poor exhaust (note the new GM ones are not great either any more :().
Nothing to be concerned over, unless it drones at cruising speeds (something that does my head in).
BTW, no such thing as a stupid question, so don't be afraid to ask here. Nobody from OOF will bite your head off over any genuine question ;)

I was a growler also. Initially quite bad too.
3.0 Elite "el cheapo" back box fitted by previous owner BUT...I MAY have a solution for you.
In my case, the rear pipes didn't extend all that far from below the rear bumper. That looked like they did BUT not enough. I fitted some tail pipe extensions and the "growling" went away, to be replaced by a gentle roar which I love the sound of.
Wilco sells the chrome pipes at around £6.00
Worked for me.

I concluded that its simply "booming" caused by the exhaust gases NOT clearing the rear bumper properly.
Taking the exhaust outlet as far away from the bumper as possible the better it would appear.

My 2.6 was sounding a bit 'fruity' last year. After a bit of poking around (and holding a rag over the exhaust with the engine running) I discovered that the twin pipes between the centre boxes and the back box are made with a seam running along the top. The seam had rusted right through and exhaust was blowing copiously just under the drive shaft in front of the fuel tank :o

cheapo exhausts really do sound kak, I got one of the last 'propper' old school GM exhausts, mine on a run is noticeably quiter than a lot of others i've driven.
Shame they are no longer available :'(

I fitted a new GM system. OK, but nowhere near as good as they used to be :(
It did turn up on the next delivery to the dealers. If I had more time I would have ordered the Eternal system and saved some money (and possibly got a better system :-/)

Spent £18 at Halfords (why are they so expensive companred to other shops) on extension pieces
Went to fit them and found similar pieces already fitted in place, filthy dirty so I could not see them at first.
Took them off, went for a 55 mile run down the dual carraige way and purred all the way. just like a lion cub.
Went back to said H's and they refused to let me return my purchase unused even though returned the same day as purchased.
Thanks guys for guidance another problem solved
A certain high street shop now has another challenge for me to look at! :y
