330 miles tonight to Daventry and back. Running on petrol all the way there and back.
Motorway speeds in excess of 80mph, not being too careful with the right foot, I got an average of 29.7mpg according to the MID.
Tank was about 3/4 when I left - when I pulled up after getting back, range was "2" miles ::) .. the petrol light came on at Ross on Wye, Started flashing before I got to the Coldra, and running on fumes by Cardiff ;D
(I wanted to empty the tank, as the stuff in there must have been getting stale)...

Those sort of speeds I tend to average 30+mpg in my 3.0l MV6 auto, so not sure something isn't quite right there :-/

Thinking about it though, is auto higher geared?
-
90 is just over 3500rpm on a 2.5

ah yes, 2.5 has different diff.... ....thats why by mpg is better on a cruise...

You're right Jaime - the manual box seems to rev quite a bit higher in 5th, and the manual is definately more thirsty on a run...

I woulnt worry about that.....you still use it up......i go through about £20/month.......just on starting.....and occasionally running out of LPG.

Yes. They usually are, to help the fuel economy (which takes a hammering while the torque convertor is unlocked). Manuals tend to be geared more for acceleration, the 2.5 even more so due to the lower power than the 3.0.
So yes, you can get better economy with an auto sitting at a constant motorway speed with the torque converter locked out. You'd need to do a lot of that type of cruising to make up for what you lose in town and during acceleration though.

My 2.5 auto did 38mpg on a run, my 2.5 manual only about 30...
-
so whats the average mpg for a v6 aound town then

Fortunately I don't go "around town" too much - and I certainly don't look at the MID when I do :o
It all depends how you drive it, to an even greater extent with urban driving. If you give it a good squirt whenever you pull away it'll certainly be sub-20. Driven carefully you might better 20 MPG, I'd say. As mentined, this is when autos are a bit more thirsty, but they are a lot less aggro in traffic so worth it IMHO.
