Hi all!
I'm new to owning an Omega and have recently bought a 2002 v6 2.6 CDX with 51000 miles on the clock. 1 owner with Vauxhall service history. My question is regarding the normal running temperature. When it gets to what I'd call normal operating temp. the needle is barely above the first marker (one below 80deg). On motoryways it drops below the first marker. When stood in traffic it will climb to 80ish or just over. As soon as you put the heating / fans on it will plumet again to below 70deg. and barley registers on the dial???? is this normal for the gauge to fluctuate so much? the engine seems to run very cool. The heating works reasonably well . I'm a bit puzzled by this as coolant level is correct with no leaks anywhere and engine looks and performs perfectly, no loss of power or gasket / water pump issues. Am I worrying over nothing???

Should be roughly middle of the gauge... Could be a dodgy thermostat but I wouldn't panic yet. Best way to test it is to start the engine from cold and hold the top hose carefully, if it heats up slowly then the 'stat is sticking open, if there's a rush of heat then it's fine :y

Thanks for your help guys, its my first Omega so I'm not used to their mechanics and working ways. I did think about the stat and will do the checks first thing tomorrow. Just was wonderin if I was worring over nothing. If it is the stat what kinda job is it to replace??? I'm quite good with engines & can find my way round Landrovers v8s cylinder heads & stuff. One think I cant find is where the stat is situated???

Not really a fun job but not too bad to do... There's a guide in the maintenance section :y But watch out for the Bas***d bolt :-X ::)
It may well be perfectly normal though ;)

Stick your location in your profile .. might be someone nearby who can help, or you might be close to one of the "mobile mechs" who will do an excellent job at a fraction of a dealers cost

Good grief!!! All that for a bloomin stat!?!? Thanks for the tip Entwood location now added ;) By the way do you run yours on LPG? What's it run like? & where do you have the tank situated? May think of converting mine in the near future.

If you trawl the forum there are many threads on LPG as a fair few of us are now on it. There is also a "how to" guide in the maintainance section.
As to mine ... some pictures in this thread .. and it runs great, no difference in power at all, just a saving of 10p every mile on fuel costs. :)

you're lucky - it's normally a struggle getting Omegas to run cool enough.

mine is a diesel and at freezing temperatures the needle points at ~87 degrees
this is a pic but it still wasn't at normal temp.. just 2-3 degrees and it would have gotten there but i had to stop :).. you can see that it was -8 degrees celsius

Hi guys,
Right over the weekend I've done a few little experiments. I started the car from cold let it run for a while and kept checking the top hose for it gradually warm. It didn't, it got hot all of a sudden, leading me to think that the stat IS working correctly.
By accident the heating & fans in the cabin were not on. Went for a run in it and low and behold the temperature gague rose nicely to dance around the 80-85deg mark AND stayed there.
(Now this is the weird part), I then put the cabin heater on, fans and heater working ok,nice and warm in the cabin, but the temperature gague dropped like a stone then the heater looses a bit of heat??? :-? Anyone shed any light on this???
