Title: Engine issues
Post by: Gavin W on 22 February 2011, 15:58:37
Hi

New to the site and was wondering if anyone can help

w Reg 2.0 GLS.

Background info:  Recently had to have a new head gasket as the old one was on it's way out

New problem:  Works fine.... Occasionally engine dies which I believe to be down to needing a new idle control valve as engine idle speed can very between approx 800 - 1300 and sitting at traffic lights has on occasion completely died

Also the first time i use the car after it sitting for hours it is fine, after using the car if i go back to it, be it 5 minutes or an hour the engine management light comes on and coming out of my road i have to put my foot down because of the traffic.  The rev counter peaks at about 4.5k revs and does exactly the same as it would do if you redline it. I must stress this only happens when the engine management light comes on

And the other day going along the motorway at 70mph the car started popping and losing power and when i got the roundabout the engine died.  Started again fine though

Anyone got any ideas on this?  I have had someone out before the head gasket got changed to plug in a computer to find any faults as the engine management light was coming on then but they couldn't find anything.  It could be a new fault but before i start spending money i was hoping someone could shed some light.  The Rev counter thing has thrown me completely.

Thanks in advance
Gavin

The codes need reading. The rev limit sounds like cam sensor on a 4 pot...

Whilst that won't hurt - you need to fix the known issues first. In this case, the fault codes...
