Where does the speedo pick its signal up from?

Is it a sensor or from the gearbox?

Neither ...  :)

Gets it from the ABS sensors to the ABS ECU then onwards to the main ECU then the instrument.

One of the classic symptoms of an ABS ECU failure is an intermittent speedo as well as ABS /TC lights  :)

Blue wire with a red trace just in case you've accidently cut one :-/
