Title: power steering
Post by: v6dave on 03 March 2011, 21:46:13
evenin all!

i have a 3.0 elite auto, 68k, and of late, the power steering has started to become heavy at times. mainly whilst trying to do a 3 point turn or getting out of a parking space. but last night, whilst turning right out of a side turning onto a fairly main kind of road, it went for a second or two, went really heavy but then back to normal again!!!

any ideas? or anyone want to buy it? need a diesel soon, damn babies lol!!!

cheers, dave

Check your fuses.  Think its number 14, from memory.  It also controls the cig lighters and often fuse gets shorted by a small coin falling into the holder....

ciggy llighter still works fine though! would a fuse really cause the power steering to play up occasionally??

Either that or a failing pump  :y

does it work better with more revs? Hard to do on an auto i know, next time you try, use the brake like a clutch, bring the revs up see if it helps.

If it does, its a tired pump. My steering gets little heavy when parking these days, i just blip the revs up a bit when it gets very heavy  :y

to be honest, if im trying to get into a tight space, keep going in and out of reverse then driver quickly tends to make it happen more often i think or maybe thats just me! lol.

i like the idea of a fuse thats gone though! what am i looking at for a pump? btw, there are no noises at all from the steering, my fitter in work had a quick look today, not losing any fluid etc, combined with the no noise part he's thinking that it maybe the rack that is playing up / fooked!!!

know anyone that may want to buy it?? lol

t .... would a fuse really cause the power steering to play up occasionally??

..... more likely to be a tired power steering pump. Not difficult to change though.  :y

mine had a faulty relay on servotronic.  never had any problems after changing it...
