Evenin' all everyone out there.
Can anyone tell me if a six ton payload dumper truck can be driven legally on a public highway using a car licence in a laden or unladen state? :-/

Not sure on that 1, what class of vehicle does it come under?

I would have thought that providing the total gross vehicle is 7.5 tonnes or less then i would have thought it would be allowed :-/

That applies to goods vehicles though, I know there is different rules for agricultural vehicles etc, can you get any info on the dvla website?

Quick and dirty explanation.
These are classed as 'heavy motor cars' and specially designed and constructed for use on private premises for moving excavated material and fitted with a tipping body etc. Can only be used on a public road if going to and from private premises. Cannot be used to carry a load or draw a trailer on the public road other than that required to complete its journey - batteries, fuel etc.
There is a distance restriction which, off the top of my head, is in the region of 3 miles from its home base, as the crow flies. Will need to check that distance if you intend to do so. Depending on width, etc, requires minimum 2 days notice to police if moving on its own steam on the public highway. Speed restrictions etc also apply.
I think it requires a relevant lgv driving licence due to weight if used on a public road.

:)I did a little dumper driving 12/15 yrs ago on the side when iwas a single Dad doing muck away for a bloke who dug out & fitted swimming pools for rich folk in Sussex. £55 a day (no questions)
Spend the morning building a pile & the afternoon trying to drive up it!!! One job involved driving down a lane to a field they also owned & the Bikini clad Mother & daughter (Horsey girls) kept us plied with cold tinnies & sarnies. Cracking job! :P :P :P
As for the legalities....3 Monkeys! ::) ::) ::)

I think it has to be road legal with plates and insured for use on road if used oten on the highway,I use scissor lifts on the public highways occasionally without plates etc and was instructed through IPAF (authorized Training) . When this question arose was told that it could be driven on the road without plates but only for 8 miles per year and some of these machines weigh in excess of 25 tonnes.
Please don't quote this as law only what I was told and would be very interested to find out if this was infact incorrect.
So any gentlemen of the Police force looking for some homework please feel free to investigate further :y
