Must be a facelift ;D

Its simply poor quality finish, sadly.

I had exactly the same fault on mine (my previous 1995 2.0 estate sunroof was perfect) so it does appear to be a quality problem on the later cars.  I took it off, sanded it down and resprayed it using etch primer and satin black paint.  It is still fine after 3 years, took me a weekend but well worth it as the rest of the car is excellent.

I'm sure Mark_DTM made a howtoo on repairing/repainting this at one time.  Might be worth a rake in the dusty archives.....   ;)

I wonder how much work it is to extract one from a salvage PFL and fit it to a FL?

Seem to remember that MDTM masked off the sunroof / roof and resprayed the trim in-situ.

I also have the same problem of flaking/bubbling paint on the sunroof frames on both my migs. One is 1998 and the other 1999 (mini-facelift).

Both also suffer from cracks in the plastic grab handle on the sunroof internal blind. Interestingly the cracks are above the driver's seat.  :(

its normal as the paint cant cover the nearby areas around sunroof perfectly.. also for dark colors heating frozing cycles are more damaging.. you cant stop it but delay by applying paint protector polishes frequently.. (talking about laquer layer but if the paint also flakes off its a different subject)

No problem with the blind thats as new, just the outer paint flaking have looked at the post and its quite easy to remove, so when the weather warms up thats on the list,
