The castle is worth a look. If you're taking small kids don't forget the 1 o'clock gun! It terrified my two when they were small.
Don't take your car! If you do, don't go any where near Princes St - unless you're a taxi or bus driver.

Not going in the car, SWMBO works for Virgin Rail so free travel for her & less than 1/2 price for me  :y

Really depends on what you are looking for and what you want to do.  Castle and the gun, like Andy says, Royal Mile, Princess Street Gardens, Shops on Princess Street, normal tourist museums etc.  Greyfriars Bobby - the wee dog that slept on his masters grave, the story an original weepy film - Mary Kings Close, the street uncovered a few years ago untouched from a couple of hundred years ago when it was blocked up and lots of other intersting spots.

Walk across the Forth Road Bridge, see Deep Sea World at the north side then walk back.  Lunch under the Forth Bridge (thats the rail bridge) at the hotel.

You could get the train to North Queensferry (north side of the bridge), walk across to deep sea world, walk the road bridge and get the train from South Queensferry back to Edinburgh.  That would blow the cobwebs out!!

Cheers, that's the kind of thing  :y

Also been told Rosslyn Chapel's worth the bus ride  :-/

Holy Root?? Prob spelt it wrong... but basically the queens pad! Interesting tour that.

Then there is the seat thing or mound or whatever is, worth a hike up there, good views.

Princess street is the main shopping one, but i would go one further back, its a narrower street full of smaller shops, much nicer.

I stayed at the Royal Garden Aparments, right in the centre of town. Very nice  :y

Add to that, the Theatre Royal Bar (Princes St).
They have ALL the single malts produced in Scotland (there are a heck of a lot)! :)

I made it to the beginning of B before I fell over...;)

I'd be cancelling that Hotel.... their apartments are VERY nice, very plush. Feels very 'home' like.

Does not have the disconnected feel of a hotel room, one we had, had 2 bedrooms, bathroom, living room, seperate kitchen. All recently renovated, cream carpets comfy sofa's.....

Highly recommended! 3 min walk and you are on the centre of Princess Street.

Rose St? How times change. 20 odd years ago you would be hard pushed to do a pub crawl along there ...... I tried. There used to be loads of pubs & bars along there.

Loved it when iwas in Endinburgh, took a tour round the castle led by a bloke calling himself Deacon Brody.
Megs Maw is one heck of a cannon,
view from the top of castle is amazing.
Went round deep sea world 3 times, novelty of the moving conveyor belt that you stand on.

Was warned about the parking so left the car at rellys house and caught train in from E.Kilbride (Calderwood).
Hope to ggo back when finances allow, sort of go to the highlnds

Or try the Rose Street Challenge... Choose a brand of whisky in the first pub (there are 25 pubs) and attempt to drink the entire street out of that brand. Managed it once but be warned - the choice of brand is important - don't pick a popular one :y

Alternatively visit the Scottish Malt Whisky Society in Leith or Queens Street - the also have luxury apartments to rent.

The the kids up Arthurs Seat - a decent hike up to 800ft - for good views over the town.

Avoid Lothian Road in the evenings and when with the family avoid the West Port area - otherwise known as the pubic triangle which is full of seedy strip bars and lap dancing clubs. Certainly not the kind of place for any OOF members.  ;)

I've lived here for 4 years and about the only thing I could tell you about is all the student bars and nightclubs :D

Used to run up Arthur's Seat twice a week from Princes Street though, great for keeping fit (it's about 7km round trip, most of it either up or down hills).

It's not really the place you want to have a car. Hence why I moved into the city centre about 18 months ago, I've got my own parking space so no worries there but I now walk almost everywhere -- 10 mins from Princes Street and 5 mins from the students' union ;).

If there's a meet I'll probably pop along, doubt I'll be using the meeg after the end of this month as the tax is up and I'm not planning on renewing it at the moment.

How about the Royal Yacht Brittannia parked at Leith to the East of the City. Try the various whisky challenges and then try to say " The Leith Police " quickly.

I used to see her/it frequently in Pompey dockyard when HM still used it. You used to see a matelot climbing down the f'ward anchor cable with his pot of white paint repairing what had been chipped off when they last weighed it. Now they've cut rather great holes in on of the once imaculate sides!!  :o

Do you have a post code for the West Port area, just so I can avoid it you understand?
