Got the dreaded EML on.
Paper clipped it and it says "16 Knock Signal Circuit 1 "
Am I correct in thinking that the sensor is behind the alternator?
The wires are not kinked or crimped and the sensors are ultra reliable.
Also the light has only come on since I filled up with Waitrose fuel :-/
Is it possible to remove the sensor and clean it with switch cleaner (or thinners) ?
Is a new sensor available on TC and how much ?
Thankyou kind folks :y :y :y

could just be poor quality fuel ... I'd live with it and put some decent fuel in .. shell power or similar .. and see if it sorts it :)
-
Yes, you might be right. It did come on a year or so ago and a tank of Shell sorted it within 5 mins.
Back then it came on with an almost empty tank. This time I think I have filled it with poor fuel and set it off.
Bleeding fickle machine ;D
Answered my own question really ;D ;D
Thanks Entwood :y :y

Is there anything I could mix into the fuel to improve matters?
Like this http://www.stp.com/products/fuel-additives/octane-booster/
Removes deposits which cause knock and ping

Better fuel ??? :) Don't know how much Waitrose stuff you have in ... but the more you dilute it the faster the problem might go away...
1/4 tank ??/ 1/2 tank .. of decent stuff might make a difference ... ?
Other option is to run it with the problem until you are really low on the waitrose stuff then fill up with good stuff ... depends how fast you use fuel I guess ... :(

7/8 of Waitrose Shite ::) ;D

I agree it could be poor quality fuel - but, waitrose fuel meets min standards etc - I would have thought it would have to really be going some, to be bad enough to put the EML on!!
Are you certain the wiring is ok?
-
Can always chuck in a bottle of Octane booster if you suspect a tankful of poor fuel.

A mile up the road this morning the light went off...and power returned :y
But why??? :-/

The "knock sensor" causes the ignition to be retarded quite a long way if it senses "knocking (pinking as it used to called) is about to occur. "pinking" or "knocking" are both signs of "pre-ignition" and are caused by several things ... poor quality fuel being the most common nowadays.
Other causes USED to be .. showing my age now - excessive carbon in the cylinders, this would glow redhot and cause pre-ignition, removed in them days by a "decoke". Wrong plugs - plugs are rated "hot" or "cold" .. wrong plugs also end up glowing and causing pre-ignition.
It would appear .. that for some reason .. your "knock sensor" has either detected a true case of pre-ignition, which has now cleared, or it has lied to the ECU but is now telling the truth !!!
Eitehr way .. it has stopped sending a "retard" signal.. so the power is restored and the light goes out !!! The ECU is now back in control of the ignition timing .. :)
Thats the theory .. why it has happened .. I've no idea !!!! :)
