Driving hard uphill.Heavy bang,black smoke.Stop,have a look.rear box split along seam and about ten wigs hanging down.Cause--unburnt fuel? Any ideas?

Sounds like the back box has blocked up due to said wigs coming loose, and the can has eventually burst due to the pressure of exhaust gas. You're not the first. ;)

Would the back box being blocked cause poor MPG?
