Title: X20XEV Headgasket change

Hey guys,

Anyone care to share comments on this?

I need to change the headgasket and so am asking if anyone can recommend a supplier for the parts and cost roughly.

Also, any helpful pointers in doing the work?  Maybe a guide on here (I can't find one?).  I haven't got the Haynes and although having done headgaskets before, I haven't done this one so is the Haynes needed?

I have read about new bolts and making sure the bolt holes are clean.

Lastly, I also need to change the gasket that goes between the head and the ally block that bolts on to the rear.  Seems there is a water leak there.  Is this a Stealership only part or can someone recommend a store online?

Gasket kit will be required. Seen them on ebay with head bolts.  Also heard Andy C is the man for parts.

Look at the following pictures.

1.Underbonnet 2.2 labeled photos (page 2 maintenance guide)

2.Cleaning the throttle valve assembly Omega 2.0 16V (page 4 maintenace guide)

3.no idea hopefully someone can help? (page 7  omega gen help)

The above should give some overall picture of the process.

removing aux belt requires tensioner loosened using Spanner or socket.  Prior to this ensure tensioner arm is correctly located between stop.(pic realy required for this)
I found removing alternator support bracket and moving slightly gave enough slack to remove belt.

got kit off ebay £11. got new bolts aswell some come with and some dont but would change them at same time allso remember you may need some new studs for the exhaust manifold as they can snap easy.

£11 for a head kit.  :o

How long has that lasted so far? :-/

Gasket kit inc head bolts £25 Vauxworld (ebay).  Don't know how good they are though.

However, if changing camseal also, been advised by those who know on here orig will be required together with black sealant :y

Hey guys,

Just doing the gasket now, at the start of the job.  Just putting Cyl 1 at TDC and noticed the timing marks on the sprockets and crank aren't exactly lined up or at least it looks that way?

I've attached a pic if anyone can confirm either fine or not?  The engine ran fine prior to staqrting the job...

p.s.  Also, on the right sprocket it has inlet and exhaust stamped on it whereas the sprocket on the left doesn't.  Now with both marks lined up the right sprocket has exhaust mark at the top.  Suppose this is right also else the engine wouldn't run eh?

Yes, thats right.

The crank could be 1 tooth out and still run, just not well.

Set the crank 90deg before TDC to get the psitons half way up/down the bores before pulling the belt (for a head off job) as there will be no valve issues then

Thanks for the replies guys.

I wonder, are there any members in the Medway area who might be able to lend me a valve spring compressor?  I know it's a big ask but for the cost of a new one, I would quite happily pay some beer money for a lend?

I'm currently near Rochester, Kent.  ME2...

All done guys.  Not too bad a job.  Couple of things learnt is...

The bolt at the base of the inlet manifold might be easier to remove with the car up...

There is a spade terminal going on to something at the rear of the head that I broke removing the head.  This was a little annoying!

Other than that, job wasn't too hard just time consuming and fiddly.

She now purrs and loses no oil or water :-)

Will put up a pic of the old gasket when I get a chance.  Water was leaking in to cylinders 2 & 3 as well as out the side of the head down the block.

Very happy chappy!
