Post by: Elite Pete on 26 January 2008, 19:07:54
for cleaning alloy wheels

Ive just finished refitting the front bumper on the Rover 25 I bought and it looks mint, it should do its only done 12,000 miles but the front alloys let it down, they are not kerbed just dirty. I have tried cleaning them today with soap and water but thats not shifted it so was wondering what to try next.

TIA :y

Cillit Bang works well on mine. Dissolves the grease and brake dust. I tend to go round, spray on each wheel and by the time I've done all four the first is ready to be rinsed off. Before rinsing, I work at them with a soft bristled brush and the dirt seems to wash away really easily.

I don't know what the long term effect of using this will be but I've seen no bad effects after doing it once a week for about a year.

Others have suggested treating them with wax afterwards. The best car wax I've found is Meguiars Carnuba Wax. It comes up really nice and is not that hard to apply and remove.

Normally I use only water..
But once a month or two, I use  wax/polish..They clean very good and protect from being quickly dirty..

if a coat of wax/polish is used once..Never too much dirt sticks on rims/alloys..After normal water is adequate.

This protector/Wax normally will stay very long if its summertime..

For winter a periodical once a month or in two months time coating is necessary again..Depending on the acidity of rain water mixed mud on  the roads..

What is this mythical summertime? So for us it will be once every month or two in winter and once every month or two in the other winter?  ;D

Autoglym 'Clean Wheels' is great, white bottle with orange writing. As with the others, don't forget to rinse well.

As Cem says, a coat of wax afterwards works an absolute TREAT. You'll never need to use any strong cleaners ever again. Just sponge and soap. Autoglym 'Super Resin Polish' is superb. A bit of elbow grease, it will remove any remaining tar spots and shine like a beauty. Pricey but absolutely safe to use. Give the car a polish with it also.

As an extra, weather in UK dont have very strong sun (or rarely)

which is very good for the car and alloys paint..And the wax will

remain much longer..Here in Turkey summertime I can cook eggs on the car within half hour ;D

By the way how you like your eggs  ;D
