Title: Ingnition switch key getting stuck
Post by: Johnny Mac on 29 March 2011, 17:09:29
Next Problem   You lot will be getting fed up with me soon  Ingnition lock Most time the key comes out very easily other times I have a hell of a job getting it out. Is it me doing something wrong is there some kind of system to prevent the key being removed? Any way given it a spray of WD40  see what that does

I have this problem also. Did squirting WD40 in fix it ? I dont fancy having to take the whole thing apart , lots of opportunity to really bugger it up as I can be a bit ham fisted.

I assume that the key sticking is puirely due to wear / lack of lubrication and that there is no special mechanism that prevents the keys being removed if (for example) its in D instead of P ?

WD40 or any similar spray is a very bad idea in locks; all it does is attract dirt which makes things worse. If it has jammed then persistent jiggling might get it loose, as might a good squirt of switch cleaner(Maplins). MIGHT is the operative word!
Although I've not followed the guide to strip one of these, I have picked up lots of Vauxhalls with jammed ignition barrels, and everyone 'had been getting a bit stiff lately.' BMWs also suffer(mine did!), and dealers keep new cylinders in stock.
Considering how difficult it is to remove the lock if it won't turn, then stripping and cleaning it now is a seriously good idea!

Be aware that this issue can also be caused, on automatic cars, by the interlock that prevents you removing the key unless it's in "Park".

Try waggling the gear selector and, if all else fails, you can remove the steering column cowling and disconnect the little square solenoid on the bottom of the lock barrel.

I think this is whats going on. The key isnt sticking, I just cant turn the ignition off all the way sometimes. I know that waggling the Gear selector and switching on and off fixes it, just wasnt sure if there was a connection between the gear selector and the ignition (so wasnt sure if me playing with the selector was what was fixing it). I will disconnect the solenoid tomorrow see if that solves it.

I get this problem from time to time - it happens when I don't have the brake pedal pressed firmly when I turn the ignition key to off and the lever on the gear selector has not seated correctly. What I do then is turn the igntion back to on, pull the gear lever up a couple of times until it clicks down fully. Then I can turn off and remove the key. HTH
