hi all, i have oil leaking from rear of oil pan on a fave lift 2.5 v6, local garage told me its an engine out job, is this the case or can i simply fix this on driveway at home ?
-
If the leak is from the sump pan then you can do this yourself. But is the oil coming from somewhere higher up and just dripping OFF the sump, rather than dripping FROM the sump?
There are a lot of Torx bolts to undo, and then gently prise the pan off. It will probably be stuck on with black sealant which you can remove with a knife blade.
You can get the sealant from Vx to put it back on again.
Don't be surprised to find it pretty horrible inside - plenty of carb/injector cleaner will sort it :y
-
thanks for the reply, i recently had the oil cooler top plate resealed at the garage, at great cost i might add, they cleaned the bottom of the engine off prior to test drive and noticed a few drops after said drive apparently coming from rear of oil pan, then proceded to inform me that the engine will have to be removed to rectify the leak, if i can get at it myself thats great, you just made my day :)
-
That's good - we are here to help and avoid OOFers getting ripped off by garages. :y
Access is snug, but I lifted both front wheels up onto thick concrete blocks and securely chocked the rear wheels. You need to be absolutely 100% sure the car is safe before getting under.
Dont be surprised to find the pan is really nasty inside - but cleaning it all out will be a real treat for the engine.
Have you done the breathers? This is the ideal opportunity for you to get the crud down into the sump pan before you fill it with nice fresh oil.
Let us know how you get on.
-
yeah i hear ya on the chocks, i work in a garage anyway, just dont have time to work on my own motor, im a tire fitter, dut also a competent DIY mechanic at home, breathers not done, how would i go about that, only had the car about a month and its my first omega and loving it so far. Not sure when ill be doing the job, prob when the weather drys up abit more i guess ;)
-
hey all, finally found time to get under the car, as it appears im now havving autobox troubles as well so under i go, after some cleaning i find that the engine oilpan is not leaking but the gearbox input shaft seal is >:(, so off come the pans, cleaned out the filter and pans, oil i got out was like water and burnt well past being oil, then added a treatment from lucas oils, its a cleaner restorer and stop leak all in one i got from the US air base i work on ;), refilled with oil, run round the block and topped off again, shifts like a new box now and 3 days on i have no oil on the floor ;D.

sounds like a result :y :y

So not engine oil at all, but automatic transmission fluid? Some garage that can't tell the difference. :-/
-
to be fair to the garage the oil was not easily recognisable, it was very burnt and didnt even feel like oil, also it was dropping from bellhousing - oilpan join.

Is just adding the sealing agent an advisable repair? How long is it supposed to last?
What would be involved in replacing the dodgy seal and make good for another 100,000 miles? :-/

I completely agree but ................ it's an eleven year old car. Sometimes you need to draw a line on what you're going to spend on it.

To be honest, I'm asking because mine is weeping slightly. I want to know truthfully if some of the mechanical genius' on here would use a sealant in their otherwise very tidy Omega? How much is it likely to cost and duration of time to replace the seal to how it should be?
My attempt at being sneaky failed! ;D

That's not what Richdury did. The additive went in with the ATF

Are you attempting to sway me Mr B? ;D
-
as mentioned this was an addetive with new oil also, old oil was 11yrs old and very badly degraded thus allowing it to pass the seal, ie i mean the oil had lost its viscosity having the consistency of water, if this dosent work in the long term then i will probably replace the whole box for the ar35 rather than the ar25 that is in there now.

This gives me some hope actually!!! The small amount of oil, maybe a single drip per night is very dark and has the consistency of weak piss. I too now hope that a good replacement will rectify the problem.
Out of interest, how much was leaking from your car? *i'll double check you didn't already say after I click post* ;D
-
just a couple of drops, mainly when the car was hot as the oil thins out when warmed, im expecting a drop here and there, as its obviousy not a failsafe fix, but nothing so far, saying that though it does say on the bottle it may take upto 100mls to work fully and ive dont around 30,

Good darts! I'll do a ATF change and see what happens..... for future reference, I dont suppose you could dig out the bottle and let me know the name of the Additive you used please? :y

I've not seen it here, as mentioned i got it from work on a US airbase, but its called "LUCAS Transmision Fix" hope it helps, if not available i'd recomend a simillar product by "Slick50"

I too will be removing both pans to get to the filter and petrol the hell out of it, so I'll be adding the Transmission fix to the sump if it's a pain in the arse to add through the level plug.

Well, it would appear that the autobox has now let go >:(
i have smoke from under car, looked under and the whole underside is covered with my nice fresh atf :(
I'm now waiting for a call back from my local engine/gearbox remanufacturer with a price to supply and fit a recon box :'(

Read this post with interest - I had atf leak a while back from saloon autobox. Removed box and fitted a new input shaft seal (shaft looked ok) - lasted ok for a couple of weeks and then leaking again. Ended up fitting another box off a breaker to cure (good result as box foc!!)

You're going to be looking at £1000 for a recon box fitted. Just go for A N Other 'new-to-you' gearbox from one of the breakers here. ;)

yeah, a member here Albs has offered me an ar35 from a 3.2 elite, would that go in my 2.5 without any moding?
