......mechanic drove it yesterday and and said it sounds more like the diff than the bearings.
So, if this is confirmed, are rear diffs from breakers worth installing or should I go new? :-/
(I guess this is a case of Mega-bucks :'( vs quite cheap ::))
Any thoughts?

I take it you've checked the Diff oil?

Will be doing that when the Car's up in the air to check what's going on - but not yet.
If the diff oil is not at correct level/volume (don't know haw it's measured) is the seal/plug an easy replace?

if you plan to keep the car I would bite the bullet and buy new.. god knows how long will go an old one..

Generally robust enough, assuming it has oil in.  I'd be inclined to get one from a breaker - non LSD ones seem to be thrown away as nobody wants them.
Remember, the ratios vary in the diff though.

I'd love to know how much Vx would quote for a brand new diff ;) change from £1000?

Personally I'd do what TB said though, if it needed a diff - go s/hand.. these things aren't exactly common points of failure (unless they're run dry of oil, that is).

I've just rebuilt a diff for one of mine. Over £400 in parts alone.

Had a second hand diff put on my old girl (£110-00p Delivered)
a few months back and touch wood is running fine and very quiet indeed instead of that continous humming noise.
OH, and heres the main thing, I phoned up a VX main dealer for a laugh just to find out how much a new diff on mine would cost, 2.5 V6 auto.
                       about,      £2000-00p (no lie) :o

Well, that confirms everything! Here's hoping that that won't be necessary!
