Hi , im new to omegas and ive just bought 1 and its got a few probs with it.
its a 3.0 elite estate P reg.
the 1st prob is it runs rough at low revs like its got a missfire
i pulled of a lead at a time to check but all of them didnt seem to make any difference.
2nd prob is that it runs very hot at 100c , the privious owner had wired up the fan with a switch , it doesnt overheat when you leave the fan on.
i have flushed the cooling system but didn t achieve anything.
3rd prob is the abs and TC lights are on.
the car feels like a boat it wallows all over the place ,is this normal?
Also where is the best place for parts, mail order if possibly as im in France.
if anyone can point me in the right direction i would be very gratefull
thanks mike

Hi Mike, welcome to the forum first of all :y
You could have a few issues here mate..
There is a Paperclip Test you can do (details on how to do it are in the maintence section) which will tell you what faults are stored on the ECU, that would be my first port of call.
1. Was there oil in the plug wells? you say you tried removing the leads off the plugs in turn nothing made a difference? maybe that could be a Dispack..
2. Someone seems like they have fitted the switch to save solving the problem. Is the water pump ok? is the thermostat opening? has someone put radweld in the system?
3. ABS & TC lights on usually points at the ABS ECU
4. Walows all over the place, if you bounce up and down on the wing the let go how many times does the car carry on bouncing? It could be your shocks need replacing.....
Difficult to say without more in depth info I reckon mate.

Here is the link for the Paper Clip Test :y

can answer problem no 3 if the speedo doesnt work as well you will need a new abs/tc ecu control unit had the same problem with a 2.5 v6 i had and you can buy the units from forum members at a reasonable price as you can with most parts otherwise take a chance with ebay
hope i have been of some help to you

well it is proberly the abs ecu then as my speedo doesnt work!
where is that located?
i will go and do the paperclip check in a min, see whats showing up.
The thermostat is opening up fine.
yes there was oil in the plug holes, i cleaned them out and fitted new leads but made no difference.
i think im going to need new shockers, where is the best place for these?
sorry for all the questions but i wont learn about these cars if i dont ask!
thanks mike

Absolutely right and not only is it the right thing to do, but this is the right place to come to ask those questions :y
Oil in the plug wells is as a result of the cam cover gaskets leaking...which is usually as a result of the breather system being blocked.
Most likely the holes into the breather box and purge valve are blocked up (the 2 smaller centre pipes from the plenum run in to them)...clean the holes (a needle clears one, the other is a much bigger hole so easier to clean) and then get the cam cover gaskets replaced using genuine Vauxhall/Opel gaskets...again there is a guide on here I believe...also worth removing the breather box on the plenum and soaking it and flushing it out using something like carb cleaner
If you have replaced the leads then the only other possibilities are the spark plugs but more likely the dispack that the leads run in to from the spark plugs.

as for replacement shocks you have plenty of choice on the front with genuine or aftermarket parts, rear shocks are gm only if the self levelling is still fitted (about £150 per pair on trade club)
-
where can i get the shocks from? pattern parts are fine for it.
right i done the paperclip test
here goes;
19 incorrect RPM (car not running i suppose)
48 battery voltage low
17 knock signal circuit 2 (whats that?)
57 idle air control low
73 mass airflow sensor voltage low
21 throttle position sensor voltage low
alot of low voltage! what does that all mean and how do i go about sorting it?
thanks mike

No, it means you need a new crank sensor. Buy genuine OE as if you use a pattern/generic part you'll be changing it again very soon.
31 is engine not running ;)
-
hi, i just changed it , because the car would only run for about 10mins then die, changed it then the car worked, could the code need removing?
or could the new crank sensor cause bad running?
im starting to get confused!
thanks mike
-
hi, i just changed it , .....
Ah! Have I not been reading posts properly ..... again? ::)
The code will still be logged from previously. Yes, you need to get the old logged code cleared so you know where you're up to. Various code readers about for this from a few quid to £thousands for a real TechII - have a look in the FAQ section for different readers available. :y :y :y
-
Twenty clean starts and code 19 should go (I believe) Other codes maybe spurious as nackered crank sensor can throw up all sorts as well as a 19.
Wait a while and recheck codes ;)
-
Change the crank sensor...genuine one routed away from heat sources...I would do this first because as said many of the other codes maybe even all of them could be red herrings thrown out by the code 19...
THAT SAID...I did have an Omega that had a red herring code 19 along with a bunch of others caused by the alternator failing...which could also explain the low voltages??
Over heating may well be because the engines working hard to compensate for the issues...

The problem you have with your ABS / TC is either the Near Side Rear ABS sensor has broken or the ABS / TC ECU. The reason your car wallows all over the place is because the power steering needs a speed signal (from the ABS / TC ECU) as the steering adjusts itself depending on how fast you are going. Itwill be very light at low speed and get heavier as you go faster. Without a speed signal the car thinks you are not moving and is therefore very light. This means that high speed cornering can be scary... :o

That's not right.
The steering does get a speed signal as you say, but when the ABS fails the steering gets HEAVIER not lighter.

Totally agree with that Andy ... when my ABS ECU went intermittent one of the worst aspects was the steering suddenly getting very heavy at the same time as the speedo failed / ABS & TC lights coming on. most disconcerting .. especially the first few times !!!
-
ok, well the steering feels fine, i started having a look at the abs tc ecu to see what 1 i need to get and i found the big plug that goes into the ecu wasnt in right.
pulled it off and cleaned it up , now the TC light is off!
the strange thing is the big plug doesnt seem to fit in its socket it doesnt seem to be the same shape?
is there different ABS ecu s for these cars?
It looks to me its been touched before , maybe they fitted the wrong one?
how can i find out which abs ecu my car should have?
thanks mike
