Title: So, these head gaskets then......
Post by: MaxV6 on 28 January 2008, 22:46:08
JamesV6 will post some photos when we can, (my mrs has gone off to a management conference with our camera.,...  ) but jeeeezus....

the reputed virtual indestructibility of the V6 head gasket has taken a bit of a knock....

he took the immediate "known issue" one ( passenger side) off, and it was SOO shagged he thought he'd check the other one... and was glad he did...

guys, i have , quite seriously, seen tea bags with fewer perforations.

utterly utterly FUBAR'ed is merely the beginning.....

no bloody wonder the thing was unhappy....

it should be about another 3-4 hours work tomorrow and the old Elite will be a nice smooth running baby again,

meanwhile , I was thinking the two of us might have to change our forum names to something like "Tweedledum and Tweedledee" or "Jake and Elwood": coz my new Elite is virtually identical.....   , pretty much indistinguishable apart from the reg plate.

and yes, the new baby is here, Drove it back from Sheffield today....    it behaves impeccably, my only slight wrinkle is thinking the brakes aren't quite as pin sharp and nice as on the old one... but then the old one had all new genuine Vx discs and pads a few months ago....

the service history IS full, comprehensive and detailed , and includes all bills and receipts to match what's stamped in the book, and more besides.....  it's not due a cam belt or water pump either....

So jobs for Telford are a bit thin on the ground for me, aside from perhaps changing the pads (and maybe discs?) and bleeding the brakes, but I'd come along just to cook anyway !  I've been missing (head stuck in work) for too long !

oh and has anyone got a load net they don't want, or would sell me??   There's one in the old car, but James will want that (for dogs, till he finds a proper dog cage-bar thingy) .

the new car has the later revised load cover, but the load/dog net is missing.

Glad the new car panned out well, and that the issue with the old one has surfaced at last.  :y

There was a load net in the "parts for sale" section not long ago. Probably a page or two down by now.

There's often a few new ones pop up on the bay. Around £30 + p&p

Cheers chaps.....

I've PM'ed the guy in the forum ads....

never occured to me to check ebay....   I'll wait and see what he says "keep it in the family/forum" and all that eh?

We have seen some instances of the head gaskets rotting away around the water jacket area of the gasket but  have not seen any   like that  which has cause rough running as it is just between the water channels. This is mainly caused by incorrect anti freeze levels over a long period of time. V6 head gaskets rarely fail causing oil and water to meet causing over heating issues. but thats not to say that it has'nt happened. EVERYTHING IS POSS ON A VAUXHALL ::)

Never seen anything like it on the V6. Head gaskets felt like they were made of something that just crumbles away., the only thing I can think of is lack of antifreeze!

Full report on the top end rebuild will follow in a couple of days.. with pisc...

twas a long day today, hopefully tomorrow will see it run...

Sounds like its gone for log periods with no antifreeze then.......any sign of corrosion/pitting on the head faces?

Max. I can probably help on the bits you need. I have a shed full of junk spares and I am pretty certain I have both of these. :)

Hiya D

if you mean the Load-net thing , I'd greatly appreciate the opportunity to exchange it for beer vouchers ! Telford on 23rd??

one other thing....  what's involved in fitting a towbar??

Pretty straightforward. Was on my saloon anyway. Holes are pre-drilled in the bodyshell with a thin sheet of steel covering them so half a dozen holes to drill through them, protect it all from rust and bolt on, then a few electricals to sort out. Did mine in half a day.
